EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “Unafraid of the Dark” (Series Finale)

If you’ve ever read Homer’s “The Odyssey,” you’ll know that it took Odysseus a full decade to find his way home after the Trojan War. This sets up an old joke that probably isn’t true: Once upon a time (1968) a review allegedly said that “2001: A Space Odyssey” had that title because it took it forever to get where it was going, and by the time you got there it was hard to really say the trip was worth it. Ouch!

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “The World Set Free” (Episode 12)

I’m feeling sort of burned out and I kinda’ don’t wanna’ review this show anymore. I mean I *WILL,* there’s only one episode left after this one, so it’d just be stupid to quit now, but I’m just not all that into it. A lot of that has to do with my basic outlook at the moment: we had a major illness in the family that required major surgery, which resulted in endless stays at, trips to, and trips from the hospital, all sorts of crazy hours, keeping the kids from freaking out, and so on, followed by a major out-of-nowhere crisis with one of the grandfolks, so I’m just sort of exhausted.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “The Immortals” (Episode 11)

Have I been too hard on this show? Last week, for the first time ever, I genuinely enjoyed an episode. For the first time, I had no real quibbles. For the first time the show managed to become more than the sum of its parts and actually achieved – for one, brief, shining moment – a quality on par with that of a second-string episode of “Nova.” You know, the filler episodes they throw in there to pad out the seasons that are genuinely interesting, but not nearly as interesting as their usual standard? Probably an episode featuring bugs or something…

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Journey: “The Electric Boy” (Episode 10)

Before we begin, I’m going to do a shameless plug for my new book, “The Bones of an Angel,” which is available for sale on Smashwords here https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/433927 and on Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K348VGI  (Sorry for the long URL links. I don’t know how to embed them on this website). It just came out this month, it’s been consistently five-star reviewed, and it’s only a freakin’ buck ninety-nine. How can you lose?

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “The Lost Worlds of Planet Earth” (Episode 9)

My computer is fighting me like crazy today , and keeps crashing and/or hanging up. Lucky you: rather than my normal rambling gonzo journalism style I’ll just stick to the topic at hand

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Journey: “Sisters of the Sun” (Episode 7)

I know the original Cosmos aired on Sunday, but is Sunday the worst possible night for this show, or what? I don’t know why, but I just find it harder to focus on Sunday, what with the tensions of having to get back to the normal grind tomorrow, and woes at the various things I was supposed to do over the weekend, but didn’t, and my vague resentment that I’m stuck watching this show rather than something cool on Netflix.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Adventure: “The Clean Room” (Episode 7)

Full disclosure: I’m not really feeling it today. It’s Easter, I got up way the heck too early, spent way the heck too much time out of the house today, and ate way the heck too much food, which I paid for by spending WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY the heck too much time in the bathroom.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “Deeper, Deeper, Deeper Still” (Episode 6)

Hoo boy. It’s an obvious joke, so I’m just gonna’ get it out of the way: that title really sounds like an add you’d find in “Home Video Magazine” circa 1980, doesn’t it? “Desiree Cousteau in…” There. We’re done. I was thinking about mentioning the ratings, but honestly we’re halfway done with the show next week, and that seems a better time to discuss it.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “Hiding in the Light” (Episode 5)

Here’s the thing: While the new Cosmos is certainly not a disaster by any stretch of the imagination, and while it’s been getting good reviews from the media at large, I’m not sure I buy it. The people I’ve spoken to in my daily capacity as a blogger and crazy person – some I know, and a whole lot more I don’t – all seem to feel disappointed by it. It’s not that it’s a bad show, it’s just that it’s not living up to its namesake. On any point you care to compare, music, writing, hosting duties, even as simple nostalgia, it suffers when put up against the same points in the original.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “A Sky Full of Ghosts” (Episode 4)

Kevin Long's picture

I took two pretty bad blows to the head today, and am debating whether or not I’ve got a concussion and whether or not I should go to a doctor. I’m also contemplating whether or not I’d miss being really really smart. On the one hand, I like being able to understand stuff. On the other hand, honestly, what the hell has being smart ever gotten me but depressed, frightened, and punched twice in the head? As a result, I’m not sure I’m in the best frame of mind (and may never be again) to review this.

I’ll give it a shot, though.
