Time Story Story Time: Roadmarks, by Roger Zelazny

Roger Zelazny's "Roadmarks" is probably the first time travel story I'd ever read, back in high school. I was attracted to it mainly due to there being a dragon on the cover, and in those days, I was mad about dragons. Still am. In fact, I'm descended from dragons, but that's a story for another day...

Time Story Story Time: The What If Scenario

While I am waiting to see what happens in the next issue of "The Star Wars," I got to thinking about how the world would be different if Lucasfilm had gone with the story as it appears in the original draft.  Personally, this story is so boring that I can't imagine that it would have made so much as a ripple in the pop culture, never mind the tsunami that "Star Wars" created.  The film would not have lasted the summer, and George Lucas would be known as "the director of 'American Graffiti.'"

Time Travel Story Time: The Time Travelers

This 1964 film from Ib Melchoir barely rises to B-movie status.  While the premise is similar to "Beyond The Time Barrier," the acting is stiff, the effects are cheap, and the story gets tiresome long before the film is over.  It's astonishing to note that this was remade twice, as "Journey to the Center of Time" and as the TV series "The Time Tunnel."

Time Story Story Time: Beyond The Time Barrier

A lot of "hard" science fiction stories take an emerging technology, and try to imagine how it could possibly go catastrophically wrong.  When "Beyond The Time Barrier" came out in 1960, the Cold War was in full swing, and so was nuclear testing.  People expected to be annihilated by atomic bombs at any moment.  However, this film depicts a futuristic world that doesn't go out with a bang, but with a whimper.

Time Story Story Time: Kung Fu Panda, A Stitch In Time

No one can accuse the animated Nickelodeon series Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness of being at all scientific.  Aside from being one of the best TV shows on the air these days--animated or otherwise--it really doesn't belong on a science fiction-oriented site.  Except that it recently dealt with time travel, and in a way that's so unique that I decided to profile it in my series on time travel stories.
