R2's Day:The Myth of "Settled Science", Part One: The Black Hole

I have a problem with the concept that science is ever settled.  If we aren't constantly questioning what has gone before, we aren't doing science, we're doing dogma.  And when the scientific establishment gets dogmatic and ossified, it tends to really, really annoy people.

Like 'Global Warming'.  We'll talk a bit about it next week, but suffice it to say that scientists are not making their job any easier by declaring something as 'settled science' when there are other (rather obvious) issues with their theories.

This week: Black Holes.

R2'sDay: A new book from Doctor Starr!

Doctor Charlie Starr, friend and contributor to the 'bot for many years, has a new (old) book out...  (Personally, I think that his name is a pretty spiffy S.F. name by itself).

I have a copy of the new book  (available at Amazon, here...) and I will be reviewing it, as soon as I relearn how to read.  In the meantime, here's a commercial!

R2's Day- Of Golden Antennas and Vacuum Tubes

Kevin has been tearing up Facebook, arguing against the meme that you could put photovoltaic cells in an array in the Sahara and solve the world's energy woes.  It's patently false, by the way, just from a technological standpoint.

R2's Day: After the crash

Recently (very recently), my workhorse MacBook would not boot.

After I whipped out my handy-dandy diagnostics disk, I made a disheartening discovery- the boot sector was hosed.

(That's a technical term...)[And Kevin's eyes have just glazed over]

So, for about a week, while I gathered the necessary tools and parts, I actually administered the site using my phone.

R2's Day- Ruminations on Ruminating

We humans are a rather simple lot.  We don’t require much to be happy- in most cases being warm, dry, having regular access to sex ,a full belly --- the basic ‘creature comforts’ will keep us sated (in most cases).   In this, we’re not that far removed from cousin Ugg, the subterranean dweller.  (“Caveman” is no longer politically correct)

R2's Day: Hey Guys! I've got a barn, let's put on a show!

Something that I'm working on-

We have a tremendous talent pool here at the 'bot.  I count myself fortunate to be able to hang out with you guys.  In that vein, I'd like to propose a project (and we can hammer out the details in the comments and the forums).

I want to see if we can crowd-source a movie as a 'weekend project' (or at least a script).

Whoever wants to participate in the process, can.

R2's Day- JL8

I know we have a virtual army of cartoonists here in our community (and in this, I include myself- though I've not seriously cartooned in a few years)... but sometimes you see something that both humbles and inspires you.

Yale Stewart's JL8 is a great comic.  It has humor and heart in just about the right proportions.  He's taken DC superheroes and put them all in third grade, while keeping them pretty much in character.  In fact, he may have a better grip on the characters than DC does currently.
