Do any of you fine folks know anything about Youtube and Video editing and whatnot?

I think the site needs to make more use of it, and I've got a number of ideas I want to try, and a couple clips from DVDs to illustrate points, and whatnot. Most of this would involve at least a little bit of editing, but no one I know has any clue how to do that sort of thing.

There's eleventy-jillion edited videos on there from 11-year-olds, so I know it can't be *that* difficult, but no one I know has the knowledge or equipment, or even the knowledge of what equipment is needed to pull it off. Never an 11-year-old when you need one. I mean, I don't even know how to upload a video to the site, much less put one together prior to editing.

We do have a Republibot channel http://www.youtube.com/user/republibot but obviously we're just letting it go to waste.

Can anyone help? It should at least theoretically be fun...

Software

All you gotta do is get some video editing software. If you use Mac, Apple Final Cut Pro is the best. You can even do green screen stuff with that one.

If using PC there is Adobe Premiere Pro. There is also Corel Video Studio Pro and PowerDirector 9. But a good Google search will give you tons of other options. You can also search "Video Editing" on Amazon under software. Hope that helps

Thanks, but if it was that easy I wouldn't have asked. I'm the kind of person who needs a bit more hands-on remedial assistance.

Ain't got an apple, ain't got the money for an apple, ain't got the "Obama For President" bumpersticker they make you have before they'll sell you an apple. And I'm inept enough not to try editing on my piece of crap PC. I'll destroy everything and probably people will die.

Start free

I wouldn't jump into paying huge amounts for video editing licenses. The programmes Sheldon listed start around $500 and can quickly rise into the thousands, depending on your license, and if you're a beginner, you won't use 99% of the features for a long time.

First thing to check is the installation dvd that came with your digital camcorder or camera. Most major brands include some fairly decent video editing software with their product, and that might be enough to get you started.

If you need more than that, chances are you already have it installed as part of your OS :-). Windows comes with Movie Maker, which is a bit limited, but might be able to do what you want for now.
You got the Apple iMovie free if you have a new'ish Mac, and that's got lots of cool features and add-on possibilities. If you have an older Mac OS, you'd need to buy it, unfortunately, but I'd definitely say it's the best value for money a Mac user can get.

The next port of call should be free video editing programmes. These are often some programmer's pet project that they started in college and that grew out of that, so they tend to be aimed at a more savvy user base than commercial software. But if that's not a hindrance, I'd recommend Zweistein (http://www.zs4.net/features) or Wax(http://www.debugmode.com/wax/). They're free for private use, but if you want to sell your videos, you're supposed to buy the software.

If you really feel like paying for software, this is a good choice IMO--will do everything you'll want for a really long time, and still reasonably priced. (http://pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Vid...)

Hadn't seen that when I replied. Scratch the cool iMovie from the list then, heh.

R3's upcoming bestseller is being edited and formatted for Kindle on a Mac.

No Obama bumpersticker required. In fact, I'm designing several Anti Obama stickers on this very Mac.

Unfortunately, I'm up to my neck in stuff, and I can't do much video work right now. (I am quite good, ex-professional... but gotta pay the bills)

iMovie is worth the purchase of a Mac, all by itself. Never mind the damage R3 could do with Garage Band....

Hi I am a Mac

I have an older version of adobe premiere and it's a difficult program to master.

Macs are Superior to any PC for photo and film editing but unfortunately I have an old IMac and no prospect of an upgrade anytime soon.

So R3 try the shareware market you may find something useful. here is a useful link.

The problem is

The problem is, as R2 can attest to, if you put me in a room with any computer, it'll break in 30 seconds in some unpredictable way that has never happened in the history of mankind, and within a half an hour the person trying to tech support it will come after me with a ball-peen hammer. And they'll be right to do it. As R2 and R1 can both attest. I doubt I could run an Apple system, even.

The more I ask about this, the more I realize my own limitations are probably insurmountable.

Let's try this another way: If I film stuff, record audio stuff, and give written directions, is there any way that I could send the files to someone, have them chop it together, and send it back to me so I can post it on Youtube? The more I look into it, the more it seems that's the only way it's likely to work. Otherwise, it's looking like I'm going to be limited to in-camera stuff.

Note that I don't actually intend to do anything majorly editing-intensive, nothing elaborate. If anyone wants to contact me directly I can be reached at [email protected]
