In short, they want to recruit contestants for a reality TV show, which will raise funds over 10 years, then the winners will get to go to Mars by 2023 on a one-way ticket (NASA plans to get there by 2030). Meanwhile, the reality show will continue to raise funding for more trips.
It all seems serious.

--Some can't even seem to imagine much shorter times apart. To some of her relatives, my American wife being in Europe is about as scary and lonely and unbearably distant as if she was on Mars :-(
