Harry Harrison 87 died today in Britain, no details are available. Harrison best known for his Stainless Steel Rat series and the novel Make Room, Make Room which became the film Soylent Green has been a prolific author of science fiction since the 50’s.

I first discovered Harrison in the early 70’s when I started reading his Deathworld series which he started in the 1960’s. He was the first author that I went out of my way to find more of his books to read. Harrison was a master of satire as seen in Bill the Galactic Hero, Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers and his most famous The Stainless Steel Rat series.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.

Sneaky!

When I read the title tag on the home page, I wondered who would utter such blasphemy.

Good one, Jim. Good one!

Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

give Obama a chance

What happened? How come we are not starving, needing armed guards to protect the farms that take up ALL the arable land in the country, as in the story?

Give Obama a chance. He is just one man, you know.

344 Million Starving Americans

I read "Make Room! Make Room!" just a couple of years ago via RosettBooks (when it was still free).

At the end of the story, which was more of a polemic with some plot elements thrown in, IMO, the Cop is working in Times Square on New Year's Eve, and sees his former girlfriend with her new, rich pals. Over their heads, a sign announces that the population of the USA is now 344 Million.

What struck me at the time was that the US census just announced the population at 300 million.

What happened? How come we are not starving, needing armed guards to protect the farms that take up ALL the arable land in the country, as in the story?

Two words:

Green Revolution
