Financial Support of Republibot

Since it's become a burning issue (ouch. Sounds painful. I understand that they have medication for that...), I've decided to put the discussion out here.

[ Just FYI, neither I nor R3 are really comfortable with this topic. R1 is, but he's not paying attention right now .... ]

Right now, funds to support Republibot come out of my pocket. Advertising helps, but is not a large or dependable stream of income.

A tip jar has been recommended, but we've been burned very badly by that in the past. If there were a way to do that without risking the site, though, the concept has some merit.

We are opening up this discussion not so much for us (we're not trying for meteoric expansion or anything like that. What we have now works for what we are doing, but we can't do much else.), but because we've gotten several emails and comments suggesting that you guys like us enough to want to help.

We are humbled and honored by this. And it would be inhospitable and ungracious to not accept your offers of generosity (knowing that a good portion will also end up in a charity's coffers as well).

Suggestions for how to make the 'Bot a bit more self supporting go here....

The Speakeasy Model

I made the suggestion in another thread on this subject. If people can ruin you via Paypal, what if you set up a dedicated email account to which Paypal donations can be made, after the donor contacts R2 via email and answers a passing question in order to recieve the donation box address? Only R2 would know this email address and the password question.

If a person realy wants to donate, they should be willing to go through a security check.

Read my comments under the WHOA! subject heading.

(edit) A second dumbass thought is to actually use snail-mail and take donation checks mailed to a postal address. I doubt any spammer could get ahold of that!

Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

That's a possibility

Though a bit labor intensive for the giver.

I could make a block (like the sharing or comments one at right) that is only visible to registered members... or I could use a point total as a minimum requirement for 'Trust' before someone could see a donate button (or my home address...)

I'm all about the automation...

Hmmm...

Mama Fisi's suggestion leaves out the opportunity for amiable passerby with pure intentions to donate, however the more I think on it, if they really like our little site here enough to support it financially, then they will probably register. Personally, I like the points idea because it would require someone be active in the discussions, and those people are more apt to legitimately love the site enough to want to contribute. The paper check thing is a downer, I think, because it might turn people away. Even if they think they might want to send a payment, they might forget or whatever, whereas if it's electronic, they can do it right then and there. No backsies.

It kinda sucks that PayPal would hold a merchant responsible for what a criminal does. They should go after said criminal, seeing as how they should have all of their information same as the merchant's.

One lab accident away from being a supervillain! Bazinga!
