EPISODE REVIEW:FLASHFORWARD "Scary Monsters and Super Creeps" (Season 1, Episode 6)

Log line - Mark, Demetri and Wedeck try to link the attack on Janis to their attac; Olivia confronts Mark about his drunk-forward, Demetri and Gough track a clue and Dylan goes missing---
We start off with Charlie claiming to be a Genius Quantum Physicist- trying to pick up a blonde with lines about the two slit experiment and quantum superposition(s). Superimposed on an illustration of Schrodingers cat, we get Schrodingers Janis, hovering between life and death....
More after the jump
I know that was an improper use of superposition, but I couldnt resist.
Although everybody is supposed to be resting in one way or another- in the first act, everybody is seizing the day. In Olivias words- “Today is all we really have”. The global obsession with the future is paralyzing and preventing action in the here-and-now.
Demetri and Gough go to check out the assassins sent after Janis. Theyre pros- no fingerprints on file, dental records.... but one of them (at least) has a blue hand tattoo under UV light-- A blue paw print.... Its a Clue! Its a Clue!!! Wheres our handy-dandy notebook and our thinking chair????
oops. Sorry. But if Steve Burns shows up... I was here first.
While trick or treating, Mark and Aaron see the kangaroo again. It might mean something. Or it may be a Dharma polar bear. Im really not sure yet.
Charlie (or whatever his name is on the show) reveals large amounts of skin, some his, some the blondes. He also reveals his flashforward and a pretty nasty psychosis. Strangers on a train, strangers in the night, quantum physicists who are also self-satisfied stranglers. One of these things is not like the others.
Janis has to go back into surgery- while Mark is out trick or treating. The men in the clear masks that Mark saw try to kill him in the future are out trick or treating also. This makes Mark nervous. Dylan has escaped from the hospital in his Flavor Flav outfit and makes a beeline for Mark and Olivias house, claiming “Its my house, too”. And Demetri and Gough find another blue paw print!!!!!!
Mail Time
Heres the mail, it never fails, it makes me wanna.... oh, never mind.
And another blue paw print! Dee and Gee need to find a thinking chair!
Mark and Lloyd Simcoe meet and Simcoe has the worst case of deja vu weve seen yet. Of course, yet again, the children have somehow much more complete pictures of the future than the adults. Olivia walks in and it gets awkward.
Demitri and Gough find yet another blue hand, and another- but this one is attached to a formerly living body.
Mark and Olivia discover that its impossible to live in the moment when you know whats going to happen. Lloyd discovers that its impossible to escape the past, when its sitting the backseat of your car, interrupting this weeks music video by Rufus Wainwright... [Charlies name is Simon. Fitting]
Observations
The big reveal at the end of the episode told us that a) Simon and Lloyd know each other b)They believe that an experiment of theirs caused the blackouts and c)Lloyd wants out... but you cant get out of the Blue Hand Group!
Okay. We dont have anything linking Lloyd and Simon to the Blue Hands, but we know its coming.
Kangaroo.
Theres an odd undercurrent here where it appears that the flashforwards are almost self fulfilling. Would any of this happen if the blackout event didnt happen?
Well, no. Hence our teaser discussion of Schrodinger, kittens and poisoned fish. Is the flashforward phenomena quantum superposition? If so, do we not really know if the future is malleable until we get to April 29th? And what happens on the day after?
Okay, my head hurts. You guys figure it out. Youre smarter than I am anyway....

>>>But that is not all the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics says. It is also true that the way an event is observed will determine the outcome of the event. Believe it or not this has been verified experimentally on the subatomic level<<<
Yes. Agreed. I even mentioned that in my comments - they vastly oversimplified it by leaving out the deteriorating isotope which triggers the death mechanism in the primary traditional experiment, which is completely different (though apparently similar) to what he was talking about with the cat, since the ACTUAL experiment is built entirely around quantum fluctuations in the decay that can't be predicted.
They simplified it to the point of ridiculousness, it means nothing.
But how abou this: What if all we're seeing is still in 'The closed hand' - it's neither the future, nor the past, they're all still in the flux state?
Ok I think they just hit the fatal flaw in this show, besides the bad accents. If you are going to play the predestination card then also playing the quantum reality card does not make sense.
If the experiment that caused the blackout had something to do with quantum physics than the futures that people saw are only possible futures. Sure our main dysfunctional couple might cause their future to happen because they are both dumb shits. But for most of the world all they have to do if they want to change their flash forward is to change what they are doing right now. Dimitri can just ware a flack vest all day on March 15 or he could take a sabbatical from the FBI.
What Simon was trying to say when he used the dead cat to get layed was that reality does not exist until it is observed. Now the writers of the show can try to say that since the future was observed that reality already exists so you can not change it. But that is not all the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics says. It is also true that the way an event is observed will determine the outcome of the event. Believe it or not this has been verified experimentally on the subatomic level. So then we are back to the future can change making some of the plot of this show pointless.
The Copenhagen interpretation has the most experimental evidence on its side it is also the one that many scientist do not like because it is a possible proof of the existence of a primary observer. Without the primary observer things get really weird or you have to jump through some pretty outrageous logic to get rid of the primary observer. This is because without the primary observer the universal quantum wave does not collapse so there is no reality.
Note to some the primary observer is also called God.

@ Neo: >>>Just one observation if the CIA did it and wants to cover it up would it not be easier just to have the director of CIA talk to the director of FBI to kill the investigation. <<<
They actually tried that, through the congressional hearings, but the director in charge of the project called in a favor from the President, and now the CIA can't shut down his project. That was last week's episode.
@ Falconlady: Nah, Nah, "Simon" the Hobbit and Mr. Simco are supposed to be brits. OTOH, Mark Benford (The Male Lead who you don't care for), Aaron the drunken Electrician, and Olivia Benford are all brits pretending to be American. Well, actually, Aaron is Irish, but you get my point.
It seems like - particularly with Aaron and Mark - the job of acting *and* maintaining a fake American accent is kind of a struggle for 'em. I felt like that with Olivia in the first episode or two, but she's rapidly gotten better at it.
Are you saying both of the bad guys aren't supposed to have their British accents? I thought it was pretty clear they're British. If they're Brits, it would be MI-6 then wouldn't it?
I'm having a hard time with the male lead. He's a bit too Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm whiney, emotional, wimpy for me.
I missed this one and forgot to set the dvr so I guess I’ll watch it sometime tomorrow on hulu.
Just one observation if the CIA did it and wants to cover it up would it not be easier just to have the director of CIA talk to the director of FBI to kill the investigation. Building a big science experiment that goes wrong is not a crime and the technology is classified so why would FBI not drop the whole thing or just do a look good investigation.
OK two points why spend the extra money to build the first test in Somalia where any goofball UN worker might find it when the US gov owns most of Nevada. The area is conveniently called the Nevada Test Site and has a long record of really black projects going on there. (U-2, SR-71, Stealth, Nuclear bombs etc) It’s not like you can hide anything from spy satellites no matter where you build it and at the test site a bunch of towers would not even be noticed as unusual.
You know, I'm getting sick and tired of Schroedinger's cat. It's becoming overused and cliched, and like a 'get out of plausibility free' card. Also, substituting a poisoned herring for the decay of an unstable isotope does over-simplify the analogy and undercut the basic premise.
That was the single most anemic version of the Bowie song "Scary Monsters" I ever heard. I'm pretty sure my band could have done better. And once again, we've got a chase scene that turns out to be a total red herring.
Of course we already knew Simon and Lloyd were associated - Simon called Lloyd on the phone two eps back, and we saw him then. This episode didn't add anything about their relationship that the 30 second phone call didn't already establish. Except: It's an experiment. Who's? The CIA, obviously. The CIA is trying to cover that up.
Once again, Dimitri's subplot was the best thing about the show, don't you think? I was ok with the boring main couple's boring main couple problems up until the kitchen conversation which seemed silly and forced and utterly, utterly false to me, a clear case of 'move the conflict forward in order to keep the story on track' rather than 'this would evolve organically from this situation.'
I liked the Kangaroo.
I was wondering why the kids have clearer memories of the future, too. Maybe just 'cuz they're kids?
20 million people is really a fairly small death count, considering. I'd have easily expected five times that. Big world, and half of it is awake and operating heavy machinery at any given moment.
We're less than a month after the blackout, however, and the world appears to be functioning normally again. I don't realy buy that.
I did like the episode, though, I thought it was a bit uneven, not as good as last weeks, but I liked it, and I like the series overall.
I have to wonder about the wisdom of casting so many brits who seem to be fighting with their accents so much. "Obi Wan" is the worst, but the protagonist is nearly as bad. His accent only works in a very narrow range of volume, and if he has to show emotion, it all cracks. "Pen" is good, though.
