Sorry for the delay in the review, but for some reason my DVR will *NOT* record this damn show. It’s recorded the season premier twice now, the second episode not at all, the third episode, and not this one. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with it, but of course this results in me shooting my blood pressure through the roof, and having to find some other source for the episodes, which is surprisingly time-consuming, because Adult Swim doesn’t post ‘em online immediately after they air anymore, for some dam fool reason. Also, irritatingly, the site is running all wonky today. Server error.
In any event, fruits of my labors, if you’d like to watch the episode online you can do it here for free http://www.ninjavideo.net/video/47438 There. See that? I’m having a crappy day, and I’m still a giver.
This episode was a nice return to form, a straight-forward character-driven episode with no major divergences. Granted, it wasn’t screamingly funny, except in the way that bickering characters and crazy people are always kind of funny, but, you know, not a lot of belly laughs. I suppose you could say it’s SCTV funny, and not really SNL funny, but that’s fine for me since I prefer the character-based stuff.

We open with the Monarch’s henchmen arguing about criptids, until # 21/Gary busts it up and scares the hell out of everyone. He’s actually Henchman One now, but insists on being called by his old number. He’s nicknamed “Two Ton Twenty One,” and the men call him “General 21” as well. They’re all terrified of him, and since 24 died, he’s whipped the Monarch organization in to a efficient force for terror, and a crack team of evil commandos. He’s actually really good at it.
Still loopy as a loon, though. He keeps 24’s skull in his room and talks to it all night long, and he’s drawn up a plan called “Eye for an I” where he figures out who killed 24, and gets revenge. Dr. Girlfriend has noticed this, and worries about him. The Monarch, as usual, is mostly oblivious.
In any event, 21 decides the Venture boys might be responsible, and kidnaps them out from under Sgt. Hatred and Rusty’s noses, chains them up in his tree fort, and subjects them to the Chinese Water Torture, which, ultimately, doesn’t do a damn thing.
Meanwhile, The Monarch had an allergic reaction to some of his fancy new French food, and looks like the elephant man. Rusty and Hatred have noticed the boys are missing, and head out to rescue them.
Rusty: “Why did I give you this job?”
Hatred: “Because I’m great! Also because I had no job, no home, and refused to leave yours.”
Hatred calls Dr. Girlfriend and explains the situation, so she tells Monarch that it’s “Modern Villain Monthly”- a magazine HE was supposed to be interviewed for - and they want to get some background info from her. She leaves while he’s still in the can. Hatred goes by his old house to get some equipment, but stumbles across his ex-wife have a B&D orgy with some other villains, and gets distraught, just sitting on the porch and crying and screaming ‘why?’ in the rain. Rusty gets bored and leaves, and meets Dr.

There's a great flashback scene in one of the episodes that parodies the 80s GI Joe cartoon (Which I'm assuming you've never seen, 'cuz you're about a decade older than me.) The Joes all wore individually designed costumes, and one of them was an indian, another was a sailor, one was a ninja, and so on. In the flashback, they did a riff on this comparing them to The Village People, and the implication was that a hell of a lot of the OSI were gay, maybe the majority. Last season we bumped in to another couple ex-OSI agents who were clearly a gay couple.
Yeah, I do admire the horribly un-PC flavor of the show. On the other hand, they do occasionally just go too far and end up really creeping me out. Hatred is a case of that.
Happy to know I have been of service in corrupting your cartoon-viewing habbits.

R3 re-watch the cut scene after the credits. 24’s arm or someone as skinny is clearly seen checking the box next to the Venture name before 21 comes in and asks how the skull moved. So since this show has ghosts and stuff something is talking to 21.
Since you (yes it’s all your fault) got me to watch this show I have watched most of the old episodes that I could find on the web. I have noticed that Dr. Girlfriend sometimes acts like the henchmen are her and the Monarch’s children so she might not have wanted the Monarch to see how far 21 has taken control of the henchmen. The Monarch is known to kill and not even to ask questions later.
21 is clearly a head case with no sense of reality which makes him the perfect villain. It would not surprise me to see them have 21 go out on his own in the future. Also clearly from the conversation that he had at the beginning he has not gone to Dr. Venture yet to have 24 cloned.
Not one of the characters on this show is PC in anyway so having Hatred around just makes sense in this sick universe. Also in your transsexual article you noted Hunter having a sex change. I recently watch the episode when Samson is sent to kill him in the note that the doctor read to Samson from Hunter it states he was tired of being afraid of being found out so Hunter was hinting he has been gay all along I’m sure that the OSI runs with the don’t ask don’t tell that the military does. ( I loved the part with Hank going to kill his father with faux This is the End by the Doors playing in the background)
