Congresswoman Shot

Earlier today, Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, along with as many as sixteen other people. The story's been bouncing around back and forth for a while - she's dead/she's not, a whole bunch of people are dead/not so many people are dead - I don't know the specifics, I don't think anyone fully knows it right now, though obviously the details will be everywhere in the next few days.

Suffice to say a nine-year-old girl is dead, an elected official was grievously injured in a cold-blooded assassination attempt, five people are dead, and at least as many more are likely to die.

And of course it's rumored that this was politically motivated. If that's so, then it's just sick and wrong. I don't care if she's pro-abortion and pro-illegal immigration: we do not settle political differences with random killing sprees. Certainly that's not worth killing a nine-year-old girl over, is it? I can't think of anything that would be worth that...

Her husband is astronaut Mark Kelly, who was scheduled to fly the final-ever shuttle mission, which, presumably, he'll be removing himself from now. I feel like...

It's crazy, isn't it? One whackjob in a crowd and a score of lives end or change forever. It's madness.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families. May those who survived recover swiftly, and those who didn't find grace.
