It is that time of year once again where we get to hear the liberal revisionists distort history and tell us what evil monsters we were to use the atomic bomb on Japan in 1945.
They revel in recounting the horrifying effects of the bombs on the populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I agree we should remember the devastation caused by the two bombs so future leaders will think twice about using such terrible weapons again.
No my complaint is the total lie the anti-bombing press and activist spread about what was happening at the time of the decision to use the bomb was taken. First they claim that Japan was trying to surrender in August 1945 this is true if you take seriously the demands that the Japanese were putting forth. They wanted the Emperor to stay in power as head of state, that there would be no occupation of the Japanese home islands and that the Imperial Army and Navy would disarm themselves with no supervision and lastly that there would be no war reparations to the nations that Japan had invaded and attacked.
The Japanese terms of surrender were counter to the Potsdam Declaration which demanded unconditional surrender of Japan and all her forces. This position was not something new it had been the public policy since 1942. It is true that in the end we let the Emperor stay as a figurehead but that was done more because MacArthur thought it would make occupation easier. Our allies have never forgiven us for not having the Emperor Stand trail for war crimes.
The other lie the revisionist spread was that an invasion of Japan would not have been as costly as the estimates of one million allied and 20 million Japanese casualties. Looking at Operation Downfall and Coronet and the Japanese defense plans shows that the estimates if anything were low. Both sides planned on using chemical weapons and the allied air attack plan called for the firebombing of every city, town and village in Japan. The Japanese were training 10 year old boys and girls on the use of bamboo spears on advancing allied troops. This does not sound like a country planning on surrendering and when the Emperor did decide to surrender there was an attempted coup by elements of the Army to stop it.
Yes decry the need to use the bomb and hope and pray that it never happens again but don’t try to change history to make the bombing more evil than another bad thing that happens in war.

People seem to forget that America is not the government, America is its people and the culture we create. The government might do things in the name of the American people but that is always the fallback position of all governments.
America is our culture, morals and beliefs and when the time comes when that is decided by the government and not the people that is when we cease to be the nation the founders envisioned.
