“The Galactica You Didn’t Get To See!”

Republibot 3.0's picture

In the lean years between Battlestar Galactica and Battlestar Galactica, Richard Hatch (Not the gay one, the other one) attempted a revival attempt of the original show on his own. The idea was that it was 30 years later, Apollo was now commander, and the fleet hadn’t seen any Cylons since “The Hand of God.” Suddenly, they turn up again. The project was called “Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming.” To promote it, he shot a five-minute trailer at Dragon Con in Atlanta, involving many of the original actors, and spiffy (for the time) new effects. Unfortunately, he didn’t own the rights (Universal does), and he was violating about a zillion SAG rules in doing this, so he only showed it at conventions, and has been very scrupulous about *Not* showing it online. In years and years of hunting for it, this is the only copy I’ve found, and it’s of pretty crappy camera-phone quality. Submitted for your approval, a glimpse of *one* of the several Galactica revival projects that were stillborn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLvHK-hOJKo

I realize it’s trendy to diss the original Galactica, but in fact it’s a better show than you probably remember (With some admittedly embarrassing bits), and I have to admit seeing the late great John Colicos in the trailer put a tiny lump in my throat and a great big pile of anger in my heart that this didn’t get made. And now it never will, and Count Baltar of Orion’s story will never be concluded.

Ah well.

Would you? Wow! That'd be great! Thanks!

Yeah, anything you could dredge up from the Fanfilm community would be fantastic, we'd love to do more stuff with that!

I'm told that SAG understands the grey nature of these kinds of projects, and has taken a more "Don't ask/Don't tell" view of them in the last five years or so. As a result this wouldn't be nearly as 'illegal' now as it was then. (Just like pot!)

There's also the possibility that Hatch - at least in the later years after he made it - might not have wanted to flash this thing around too much since he was a recurring character on the new BSG. That might have made things awkward with his new employers.

Hrmm.

SAG's gotten a lot more accommodating, from what I hear, about web projects (CF Dr. Horrible,) I'm not sure if that would help Richard here.

I'll see what I can dredge up with the fanfilm community.

Doesn't own the rights.

He claims it's because he doesn't own the rights to any of it - characters, setting, names, anything - and also because he coralled everyone in it in to performing for free in a violation of SAG bylaws: DO NOT work for free, and if you do, DEFINITELY don't work for free in an unlicenced and flatly illegal product.

That's not such a huge deal today with the whole fanfilm revolution going on, and Phase Two bluring the line between fan and official productions (ANd it bugs the hell out of me that I can't get any fan film people to let me interview them for this site!), but I guess it was a solidly legitimate concern 10 years ago when he made this. I also *suspect* but don't know that several of the people in it made him promise not to distribute it, for fear of SAG sanctions, but I dunno.

Republibot 2.0 did some of the CGI modeling for this thing, btw.

Hatch also did a standalone trailer for an original project he was trying to launch some years after this called "The Great War of Magellan." That one prominently featured Jason Carter, who played Marcus Cole on Babylon 5.

Nice find

I've been looking for this for years. I'd love to see the actual vid. I wonder why Richard doesn't just release it.
