DRIVE-BY GEEKERY: Captain Tightpants Returns on Castle...sort of...

Republibot 3.0's picture

For anyone who watched Monday night's 'very special' Halloween episode of Castle, you were treated to a none-too-subtle shoutout to genre fans. The episode starts out with Nathan Fillion ("Castle") playing with quick-drawing and re-holstering a cool-looking pistol while wearing his old costume from "Firefly." (in which he played Mal Reynolds)

He busts in to his livingroom, gun drawn, and his daughter asks him what he's supposed to be. "I'm a space cowboy."
"One," she replies, "There are no cows in space, and two, didn't you wear that thing like five years ago?"

EPISODE REVIEW: Dollhouse: “Omega” (Episode 12 - Series Finale)

Republibot 3.0's picture

“We’re superior people, with a touch of German thrown in. What could possibly go wrong?”
---- Echo.

I have to admit, I’m kind of blown away by it all. Though Mr. Whedon really only delivered half a series, and only half of that was any good, the bit that was good totally lived up to the hype, even if that doesn’t completely redeem the slow, boring, uninspired start.

PLAY BY PLAY:

I’m going to do this in chronological order, rather than follow the fractured narrative structure of the episode, since it’ll make it easier for you, the reader

EPISODE REVIEW: Dollhouse: “Briar Rose” (Episode 11)

Republibot 3.0's picture

If you’d told me two months ago that a show as crappy as Dollhouse would end up mesmerizing me, I’d have called you a liar, a filthy, Buffy-obsessed Whedonite liar. The show was a turd. I mean, go back and read my early reviews. I stand by ‘em: it stank. And yet a bit over a month back, the show instantly rocketed in to position to claim the “Most Improved Student” award. It really is compelling and occasionally amazing TV, way better than the final season of Galactica.

(Belated)MOVIE REVIEWS: “Serenity” (2005)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Just re-watched this movie and I just can’t help being disappointed by it. I realize that’s heresy since I loved the series beyond any limit of what is considered socially acceptable, but there you are.

Having pondered it a bit for a while now, I think there's no single cause, but probably a lot of tiny one that by themselves would be unnoticeable:
* The soundtrack was done by someone different from the TV show, and made use of no themes from the show, excepting a 15 second audio cameo in the very end of the credit roll. The STYLE of the music is different, too.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Dollhouse: "The Grey Hour" (Episode 4)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Hey, whadya' know? A month in to the run of this rapidly-dying muddle of a show and we finally got a good episode!

We start off in mid-mission with Echo as a midwife helping a couple deliver their baby amidst embarasingly bad dialog ("You mean she's going to be a lesbian?"), then we cut to deprogramming and Echo back at the Dollhouse hanging out with Sierra and Victor. Topher has noticed this, and attributes it to the herd instinct you see when flocks of birds turn on a dime, and not some kind of hidden memory.

TV Reviews: Dollhouse: "The Target" (Episode 2)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This episode is simultaneously much better, and much more disappointing than last week's debut.

We start off with a flashback scene to three months ago when one of the Actives goes whacky and kills a skillion other Actives and guards in the Dollhouse. He leave Echo alive, however.
