EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Time” (Season 1, Episode 8)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Man oh man oh man, did they knock it out of the park tonight, or what? This is the first unquestionably great episode of the series, and obviously if they submit one for awards this year, this’ll be the one they choose. We’ve all had our misgivings with the show. Even I - and I really do like the show - have had some misgivings here and there, not so much with the premise or the cast or whatever, but just that it seemed to be taking so long to get going in the first few episodes.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Earth” (Season 1, Episode 7)

Republibot 3.0's picture

We’re three episodes away from the halfway point in the season, and the obligatory Syfy/Sci-Fi channel mid-season break, and I find that I’m firmly on board for the show, and I feel as if the low key long-term startup of the show is starting to pay off. Many have complained that it feels like it’s spinning it’s wheels -and compared to the previous shows, it is - but what a lot of critics don’t seem to realize is that this show isn’t aiming to be a carbon copy of the previous series, but rather a new kind of storytelling for a new kind of show set in the same ol’ fictional Gateverse.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Water” (Season 1, Episode 6)

Republibot 3.0's picture

It’s interesting that a lot of the diehards I know are complaining that this isn’t a Stargate show, not really, and they never use the stargate, and they’re never visiting planets, and they’re always on that damn ship, and they never go anywhere and wah wah wah I wanna’ see people walking through the woods in Cascadia and pretend it’s an alien planet, dammit! It always cracks me up when people do that. They claim they want something new, they claim that they didn’t like SGA because it was too much like SG1, but then they say that SGU is too different, and they can’t handle it.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate: Universe: “Light” (Episode 5)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The introductory demi-arc to set up the whole premise of “Universe” - a kind of miniseries-within-a-series - concludes tonight offering little in the way of surprises, but a lot of characterization, and a better look at the odd new direction this series is heading in.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Darkness (Part 1)”

Republibot 3.0's picture

And suddenly - bang - just like that, I’m totally in love with this show, and I totally get what they’re doing. Granted, just like the rest of you, I was underwhelmed with the premier, but now that I see the direction they’re taking, it all begins to make sense! All those people - folks obsessed with SGA mostly - who damned this show before it entered production, swearing they'd never watch it, and claiming it was gonna' be Stargate: One Tree Hill can kiss my surprisingly hairless ass - the show is good!

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Air, Part 3” (Season 1, Episode 3)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The third episode picks up right where the first one left off, and in fact kind of surprised me by being the final act of the premier. Even more to my surprise, it was much better than the premier as a whole, and the previous episode in specific.

Around 1986, Lt. Scott is born, though of course he’s not a Lieutenant at the time.

Around 1994, or a bit prior, both of Scott’s parents die in a car accident. The boy is raised by a catholic priest. Scott, naturally, decides he wants to grow up to be a priest as well.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate: Universe: “Air, Parts 1 and 2” (Season 1, Episodes 1 and 2)

We’re all slaves to what’s come before. If you have a new thought, a million people have had it before you, more than likely. Whatever language you speak, odds are it wasn’t your decision to speak that language, it was just dumb luck that you happened to be born in to the country that spoke that language. If you like Rock and not Opera, it probably has more to do with the socioeconomic conditions and time you were born in to, more than a conscious decision on your part. Everything we do is built upon a billion things we didn’t do that came before us.

"Stargate Universe" and "Dollhouse": Ah, bugger!

Republibot 3.0's picture

Ah, bugger!

I've just realized that Dollhouse (Fox, Friday, 9PM) and Stargate Universe (Syfy, Friday, 9PM) have something in common. In deference to Trekies who might be reading this, I'll simply say "They're both on at the same time." (Trekies are notoriously bad at math)

DVD MOVIE REVIEW:“Stargate: Continuum” (2007)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This is the second straight-to-DVD movie to come out since Stargate:SG1 was cancelled a bit over a year ago. The first one, “Stargate: The Ark of Truth,” was somewhat disappointing. When the show was abruptly cancelled by Skiffy (And confusingly as well, since it was at that time their second-highest-rated program), it was in the middle of a major plot arc involving a war with aliens called the “Ori.” Ark of Truth had to take all the plot elements that had been intended for seasons 11 and 12 and cram them into a single 109 minute movie.

BREAKING (Studio) NEWS: Dollhouse isn't cancelled...yet, and SG1 makes a third return from the grave

Republibot 3.0's picture

This just in: FOX will *not* be running the finale of Dollhouse. This *does not* mean that Dollhouse is cancelled...yet. The network hasn't reached a decision on that subject yet, but there's one episode being produced that they won't be airing.
