EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Sabotage” (Season 1, Episode 16)

You know, I find it funny how my predictions for this show are consistently wrong. I mean, seriously, not to toot my own horn, I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I have watched *A LOT* of TV, and it’s hard to come up with something I haven’t seen a million times, yet they still manage to surprise me. I think it’s not so much that I’m seeing things I haven’t seen, but they’re spinning and combining them in new and original ways.

Which, of course, is what makes this show so increasingly good.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Lost” (Season 1, Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I was literally on the edge of my seat through this whole episode, and not just because of my chronic back pain. I’m a pretty jaded guy. I’ve seen everything TV can throw at me at least half a dozen times by now, so it’s really hard to engage me in something, but this was genuinely tense, and I was really expecting an ending that I didn’t get, which makes the differences between this show and the previous SG series all the more striking and interesting.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Human” (Season 1, Episode 14)

It’s backstory city here on SGU tonight: We have two parallel plots running, the first, and more important being an extended semi-flashback in which we watch the things that turned Rush (A person) into Rush (An evil scheming jackass). In the other one, we’ve got a fairly standard peril-on-a-planet-with-the-clock-ticking plot. Both take a rather surprising turn, which is becoming the calling card for this series, and really has always been a trademark of the SG franchise, if we’re honest.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Yet Another Spinoff?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Syfy exec Mark Stern recently announced that the network may be seeking a second spinoff to the memorable, influential, buzz worthy, but ultimately not-very-good “Battlestar Galactica” series. This hypothetical series would be “Space Based” and possibly “Not a traditional series,” whatever that means.

So let’s have some irresponsible speculation as to what that means:

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Faith” (Season 1, Episode 13)

I’m still kind of struggling to find the best format for these reviews. Oh, sure, I could - and in fact generally do - slap together a recap, and tack some observations on the end, but that’s really boring to read and frankly pretty darn dull to write (Though I do enjoy the snark in some of the crappier series we review). I feel - in my case, anyway, I can’t speak for the others that write for the site - that it shows a lack of imagination, and also a lack of appreciation for the series themselves. Or at least the good ones, which deserve a little more insight.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Divided” (Season 1, Episode 12)

It’s seeming more and more like the long slow burn of the first half of the season was justified!

PLAY BY PLAY

Chloe has a bad dream set to a vaguely grungy minor-key song that probably would have seemed really edgy and impressive circa 1996, but it’s just dated, manipulative, and kind of slow now. Afterwards she has a talk with Rush, who’s also been having the same alien-related nightmares.
“Everyone thinks it’s over, that we’re safe, but it’s not over is it?”
“No, it’s not.”

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate: Universe : “Space” (Season 1, Episode 11)

SGU returns, and really not a moment too soon. Actually, I don’t know what I mean by that, it just came out. Certainly I’ve been missing the show, certainly I’ve been looking forward to seeing new episodes, but there is a strange feeling of relief involved in the show coming back which I hadn’t realized I had until now. I wonder why that is? Certainly there’s no shortage of other SF shows on the air right now.

Ah well.

Republibot 3.0's picture

John Scalzi, the creative consultant for Stargate: Universe has mentioned in his blog that he's been signed on for the second season of the series, and is already hard at work looking at scripts and offering feedback.

There may have been an official announcement prior to now, but if there has, I haven't heard about it until Mr. Scalzi mentioned it just now. He goes on to say

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Justice” (Episode 10)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I’m kinda’ tired, and this is my third full-length review of the night, and my fingers hurt and I’m tasting metal, so let’s just jump to it without my normal coy intro, shall we? Sorry. I apologize. I’ll be charming - or at least time consuming - later, but for now…

PLAY BY PLAY

We start off with a great scene of Sgt. Greer tasting some alien food, then going to yell at Baldo, who was supposed to be on KP an hour earlier, but didn’t show. In the cabin, he finds Baldo dead, and immediately contacts Young. It looks like a suicide, but there’s no weapon.

[REVISED] EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Life” (Season 1, Episode 9) [REVISED]

Republibot 3.0's picture

The version of this review I initially posted last night was rather terse and threadbare because I was tired and wasn’t feeling well, so I figured I’d expand it a bit today as I’m feeling better (But even more tired. I just ended up staring at the ceiling last night until 5AM, insomnia.) The changes will all be in the “Observations” section.

PLAY BY PLAY

We start out with a montage of various crew people going through their daily routines - Chloe is doing yoga, Eli is spying on Rush, one of the female doctors is having sex, the masses are doing calisthenics, Camille is sketching a Polynesian landscape, and Baldo, the recurring minor antagonist with the attitude problem, takes his last anti-psychotic pill.
