EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Pathogen” (Season 2, Episode 4)

I’ve been wondering lately how the Stargate franchise is continuing to operate. I don’t mean that in a Voyager-era Star Trek “Why are people still watching this crap” sense: Stargate has always been great. I just mean financially. MGM is bankrupt. They’re so broke they had to abandon a James Bond movie in preproduction because they didn’t have the money to pull it off. They’re so broke that they’ve only got four movies - only four!

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Awakening” (Season 2, Episode 3)

“Gee, Skipper, do you think we’ll get off the island this week?”
“Probably not, little buddy. If we did, the show would end.”
“Ah, bugger, Skipper.”
“Mary Ann likes you, you know.”
“Shut up.”

The Destiny docks with the alien ship they spotted last week, though it’s not so alien as we thought. It’s one of the Ancient “Seed Ships,” which were sent out long in advance of Destiny itself, to set up the stargate network. These vessels were always unmanned, and they appear to have stumbled across one that broke down for whatever reason.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Aftermath” (Season 2, Episode 2)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Wow.

Just wow. It’s not that anything particularly adventurous or unprecedented happens here. Granted, things go from bad to worse, and the ship loses yet another major asset, but the point of this show is basically to glory in the slow sinking of this boat, and torture the rats, so there’s nothing new there. What stunned me - what will no doubt have stunned everyone - is the tragic-yet-harrowing death scene.

Why do people get thrown out of the gate on Stargate: Universe?

Republibot 3.0's picture

This article was originally posted as a reply to Nwkeys a few weeks back, but I thought it was interesting enough to clean it up a bit and re-post it here.

Twice now on Stargate Universe we've seen people coming through the gate from the Milky Way, and getting hurled across the room.

The "Thrown through the gate" thing is never explained, but my hunch is that it has to do with a difference in momentum between the "In" gate and the "Out" gate. This prompts an interesting (no, really) discussion in physics.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Stargate Universe: “Incursion, Part II” (Season 1, Episode 20,) SEASON FINALE

Republibot 3.0's picture

You know, it really wasn’t all that good. We were on a great run: of the last 12 or 13 episodes, with that one ‘dream bug’ episode, they were all good-to-great. Last week’s episode was a step down, but I forgave it as it was an intermezzo in a three-part story. This week’s even-less-satisfying episode is a cliffhanger that won’t be resolved until October, so, really, this one is *also* an intermezzo.

That’s one intermezzo to many.

Anyway, the Lucians still have the gate room, Chole and Eli are still lost, stuff still sucks all ‘round.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Incursion (Part 1)” (Season 1, Episode 19)

Republibot 3.0's picture

There’s a degree of parallelism between the three-part series premier and this three-part season finale. We’ve got most of the classic SG1 team turning up - Jack, Daniel, Sam - we’ve got the Lucien Alliance, we’ve got people traveling to the ship and things not going exactly as planned, and we’ve got problems with the air supply, and we’ve got yet another Icarus-like planet blowing up. Daniels’ even a cameo on a DVD, just like in the premier.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Subversion” (Season 1, Episode 18)

Republibot 3.0's picture

With tonight’s episode, SGU officially becomes the best SF show on the air. I’d even go so far as to say what they did tonight is superior to anything we’re seeing out of Lost at the moment, and that’s high praise indeed. This is also the episode where “Universe” finally took it’s own place alongside the previous two Stargate shows as an equal, as opposed to the frustrating departure from form it started out as. And best of all: no musical montages tonight!

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Pain” (Season 1, Episode 17)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Ok, yeah, I’m just not feeling it tonight. We’re coming off a really solid five-episode winning streak for SGU, so I suppose we were due for a downturn. This is just a fumble, it’s not a complete failure, but, of course it’s not a complete success either and…well, I just kept waiting for the big twist that never really showed up.
