The Stargate Franchise Is Now Officially Dead

Republibot 3.0's picture

Here it is a month or two after the blade fell, and I find that curiously I'm still gutted by the cancellation of "Stargate Universe." I can't explain it. SF shows get cancelled all the time, even ones I like, and it doesn't affect me like this. It wasn't even that good a show, to be honest. The B5 spinoff gets canned halfway through its first season? Meh. "Caprica" craps out? Meh. "FlashForward" sucks? Eh, who cares. "Kings" dies on the vine? Well, ok, that one hurt a bit because it was such an odd show on every level, but that was just curiosity on my part.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Gauntlet” (Season 2, Episode 20, Series Finale)

Republibot 3.0's picture

…and just like that, it ends. Not with a bang, not with a whimper, but with a profound silence that speaks off all that might have been, but never will. It’s a sad ending, a needless ending, but I see now what the producers meant: it’s a solid ending, and almost - if not quite - satisfying. This isn’t an ending, nor is it a cliffhanger in the way ‘Gate usually does ‘em, this is not a conclusion, but….but the story can rest here. As likely as not, it’ll never be revisited, as likely as not this is the end of Stargate forever, but we end with hope and silence.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Blockade” (Season 2, Episode 19)

You know when the president (The current one, or just pick one you like) makes a State of the Union address, and then, when it’s done, the commentators basically tell you everything you just heard, as if you didn’t just hear it? I’ve sort of waxed and waned about how detailed my synopses should be. Generally I’ve erred on the side of comprehensiveness, but I’ve increasingly soured on that. I mean, I’ve gladly done it for going on three years now, but it’s tedious to do, and I imagine kind of boring to read.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Epilogue” (Season 2, Episode 18)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Last time, as you recall, the Space Family Robinson had met up with the descendants of their own doppelgangers, who had been projected two thousand years back in time. They took the Descendants home to find their world, Novis, was dead. Tonight we pick up from that discovery…

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Common Descent” (Season 2, Episode 17)

Firstly, let me apologize for the late review. Syfy once again shows their contempt for their viewers by randomly changing their schedule without any advance warning. (Advance warning in this case should probably be them knocking on my door, or at least calling, since I’m kind of inattentive) I had to stay up to watch the rebroadcast.

Secondly let me once again bemoan the death of this show, and take yet another stab at Syfy’s contempt for their audience (saying it twice gives it emphasis!). Seriously: This show has gotten pretty freakin’ good in the past few weeks.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “The Hunt” (Season 2, Episode 16)

Just four episodes left until the third consecutive “Unending” of a Stargate series; and quite probably the last one for quite a while as well.

A landing party is contemplating killing some space deer. It’s been 10 months since anyone’s had any meat. Greer and Scott go, but Greer can’t take the shot. A six-legged Cat/Bear thing attacks and injures a whole bunch of people, and drags off TJ and a redshirt.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Seizure” (Season 2, Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I love this show. I’ve always liked it, but as I’ve grown more comfortable with the characters, and as the producers have grown more comfortable with the idea that they actually need to engage the audience, I’ve come to love it. I’m not blind to its failings: it still cranks out the occasional clunker, the last two weeks were rather poor. It has a vision, however, and isn’t it nice to be able to watch a show that actually gets a little bit better as it goes along, rather than the endless batches of shows that peak early, and waste everyone’s time while they take forever to bleed to death?

EPISODE REVIEWS: Stargate Universe: “Hope” (Season 2, Episode 14)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Six episodes left, probably no resolution to the story. Much as I hate Syfy (And I do, believe me, I do) and much as I blame this debacle on them, I can’t help notice the ratings on this show continue to deteriorate rapidly. The Midseason cliffhanger dropped fifty-nine thousand viewers between part 1 and part 2. The next episode dropped another hundred thousand. Last week (Which really wasn’t a very good episode) dropped another hundred and fourteen thousand viewers.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Alliances” (Season 2, Episode 13)

The Destiny receives two visitors via the Communication Stones: A lady senator (Senatrix?) and Harry from 3rd Rock from the Sun. In the worst tradition of Star Trek, the Senatrix is one of those pain-in-the-ass Ambassador/commodore types who show up to question Kirk’s command, make an ass of themselves, endanger the ship, and so on. Harry (From 3rd Rock) is the new head of Stargate Research, and an old rival of Rush’s.
