EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Sabotage” (Season 1, Episode 16)

You know, I find it funny how my predictions for this show are consistently wrong. I mean, seriously, not to toot my own horn, I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I have watched *A LOT* of TV, and it’s hard to come up with something I haven’t seen a million times, yet they still manage to surprise me. I think it’s not so much that I’m seeing things I haven’t seen, but they’re spinning and combining them in new and original ways.

Which, of course, is what makes this show so increasingly good.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Lost” (Season 1, Episode 15)

I was literally on the edge of my seat through this whole episode, and not just because of my chronic back pain. I’m a pretty jaded guy. I’ve seen everything TV can throw at me at least half a dozen times by now, so it’s really hard to engage me in something, but this was genuinely tense, and I was really expecting an ending that I didn’t get, which makes the differences between this show and the previous SG series all the more striking and interesting.

BREAKING NEWS: "V" and "Flash Forward" ain't dead yet, and neither is Stargate Universe

The Futon Critic is reporting that the two most prominent on-the-bubble genre shows at the moment have gotten orders for more episodes. Specifically:

Stargate: Ruminations.

Now that SGU is on hiatus for a bit, I thought I'd bring up some things I've been wondering about since it came on. I really began to question this stuff around episode 7 or so, and while it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the show, some questions were just kind of nagging at me. I didn't really want to broach the subject while they were actually running new episodes, however, because I didn't want to "Insult the living by speaking of the dead" as they say. Now that we've got some time to catch our breath, however:

1) What the hell is SG1 doing these days?

[REVISED] EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Life” (Season 1, Episode 9) [REVISED]

The version of this review I initially posted last night was rather terse and threadbare because I was tired and wasn’t feeling well, so I figured I’d expand it a bit today as I’m feeling better (But even more tired. I just ended up staring at the ceiling last night until 5AM, insomnia.) The changes will all be in the “Observations” section.

PLAY BY PLAY

We start out with a montage of various crew people going through their daily routines - Chloe is doing yoga, Eli is spying on Rush, one of the female doctors is having sex, the masses are doing calisthenics, Camille is sketching a Polynesian landscape, and Baldo, the recurring minor antagonist with the attitude problem, takes his last anti-psychotic pill.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Time” (Season 1, Episode 8)

Man oh man oh man, did they knock it out of the park tonight, or what? This is the first unquestionably great episode of the series, and obviously if they submit one for awards this year, this’ll be the one they choose. We’ve all had our misgivings with the show. Even I - and I really do like the show - have had some misgivings here and there, not so much with the premise or the cast or whatever, but just that it seemed to be taking so long to get going in the first few episodes.

What Order Should I Watch The Stargate Shows In?

So you wake up one morning, and everyone is talking about the new “Stargate; Universe” show. For whatever reason, you’ve never watched a Stargate show before. Why? How should I know? Maybe you’re a recovering Trekie who feared excommunication for looking over the fence at what the other shows were doing. Maybe you’re a liberal demmekrat or a women’s studies professor who inherently fears any show that portrays the United States Armed Forces in a positive light. Maybe you were living in a Unibomber-style shack in the middle of nowhere and didn’t get cable. Maybe you’re Jane Goodall.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Earth” (Season 1, Episode 7)

We’re three episodes away from the halfway point in the season, and the obligatory Syfy/Sci-Fi channel mid-season break, and I find that I’m firmly on board for the show, and I feel as if the low key long-term startup of the show is starting to pay off. Many have complained that it feels like it’s spinning it’s wheels -and compared to the previous shows, it is - but what a lot of critics don’t seem to realize is that this show isn’t aiming to be a carbon copy of the previous series, but rather a new kind of storytelling for a new kind of show set in the same ol’ fictional Gateverse.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Water” (Season 1, Episode 6)

It’s interesting that a lot of the diehards I know are complaining that this isn’t a Stargate show, not really, and they never use the stargate, and they’re never visiting planets, and they’re always on that damn ship, and they never go anywhere and wah wah wah I wanna’ see people walking through the woods in Cascadia and pretend it’s an alien planet, dammit! It always cracks me up when people do that. They claim they want something new, they claim that they didn’t like SGA because it was too much like SG1, but then they say that SGU is too different, and they can’t handle it.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Air, Part 3” (Season 1, Episode 3)

The third episode picks up right where the first one left off, and in fact kind of surprised me by being the final act of the premier. Even more to my surprise, it was much better than the premier as a whole, and the previous episode in specific.

PLAY BY PLAY

Around 1986, Lt. Scott is born, though of course he’s not a Lieutenant at the time.

Around 1994, or a bit prior, both of Scott’s parents die in a car accident. The boy is raised by a catholic priest. Scott, naturally, decides he wants to grow up to be a priest as well.
