Doctor Daniel Jackson Explains It All To You....

Kevin Long's picture

The kid and I have worked our way up to Stargate: Universe, which is alas no longer streaming so we're having to netflix it via disks. As slow as this is, it has some cool extras on it, such as the Kino diaries (Web-only content, mostly the diaries of some of the characters, though some are clearly deleted scenes), and on disk 2: "The Daniel Jackson Introductory Collection."

Stargate: Ruminations.

Now that SGU is on hiatus for a bit, I thought I'd bring up some things I've been wondering about since it came on. I really began to question this stuff around episode 7 or so, and while it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the show, some questions were just kind of nagging at me. I didn't really want to broach the subject while they were actually running new episodes, however, because I didn't want to "Insult the living by speaking of the dead" as they say. Now that we've got some time to catch our breath, however:

1) What the hell is SG1 doing these days?

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Gauntlet” (Season 2, Episode 20, Series Finale)

Republibot 3.0's picture

…and just like that, it ends. Not with a bang, not with a whimper, but with a profound silence that speaks off all that might have been, but never will. It’s a sad ending, a needless ending, but I see now what the producers meant: it’s a solid ending, and almost - if not quite - satisfying. This isn’t an ending, nor is it a cliffhanger in the way ‘Gate usually does ‘em, this is not a conclusion, but….but the story can rest here. As likely as not, it’ll never be revisited, as likely as not this is the end of Stargate forever, but we end with hope and silence.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Common Descent” (Season 2, Episode 17)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Firstly, let me apologize for the late review. Syfy once again shows their contempt for their viewers by randomly changing their schedule without any advance warning. (Advance warning in this case should probably be them knocking on my door, or at least calling, since I’m kind of inattentive) I had to stay up to watch the rebroadcast.

Secondly let me once again bemoan the death of this show, and take yet another stab at Syfy’s contempt for their audience (saying it twice gives it emphasis!). Seriously: This show has gotten pretty freakin’ good in the past few weeks.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “The Hunt” (Season 2, Episode 16)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Just four episodes left until the third consecutive “Unending” of a Stargate series; and quite probably the last one for quite a while as well.

A landing party is contemplating killing some space deer. It’s been 10 months since anyone’s had any meat. Greer and Scott go, but Greer can’t take the shot. A six-legged Cat/Bear thing attacks and injures a whole bunch of people, and drags off TJ and a redshirt.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Seizure” (Season 2, Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I love this show. I’ve always liked it, but as I’ve grown more comfortable with the characters, and as the producers have grown more comfortable with the idea that they actually need to engage the audience, I’ve come to love it. I’m not blind to its failings: it still cranks out the occasional clunker, the last two weeks were rather poor. It has a vision, however, and isn’t it nice to be able to watch a show that actually gets a little bit better as it goes along, rather than the endless batches of shows that peak early, and waste everyone’s time while they take forever to bleed to death?

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Alliances” (Season 2, Episode 13)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The Destiny receives two visitors via the Communication Stones: A lady senator (Senatrix?) and Harry from 3rd Rock from the Sun. In the worst tradition of Star Trek, the Senatrix is one of those pain-in-the-ass Ambassador/commodore types who show up to question Kirk’s command, make an ass of themselves, endanger the ship, and so on. Harry (From 3rd Rock) is the new head of Stargate Research, and an old rival of Rush’s.

BREAKING NEWS: Stargate Universe is officially cancelled.

Republibot 3.0's picture

If I love it, it will die.

Stargate Universe has been cancelled by Syfy. The largest and riskiest departure from the standard Stargate format has also been the only unsuccessful one. The announcement was made earlier today

There's also been a lot of twitter chatter about it

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Visitation” (Season 2, Episode 9)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The up/down/up/down, but still generally rather pathetic overall ratings continue, with last week down about 50,000 viewers from the week before, and the previous week up about 107,000 over the week previously, which was itself down about 45,000 viewers from the weak before that. The numbers are hovering around one million a week, up a tick, down a tick. This is bad. Essentially, it means that MGM is paying about two dollars per person watching the show. A buck an eye, half off for cyclopses. Not as bad as Caprica, of course, but not far better.
