Saturday Afternoon B-Movie Crapfest

SATURDAY AFTERNOON B-MOVIE CRAPFEST: “Atomic Submarine” (1959)

Kevin Long's picture

This is a very rare example of a movie I loved as a kid that utterly left me flat a mere thirty years later. I like space, I like submarines, a movie about a submarine that hunts flying saucers should be gold, right? It’s not. It just totally did nothing for me. The utter lack of excitement is palpable. Even scenes that I remember liking quite a bit – such as when a beatnik and a naval officer get in an argument about uniforms (“These uniforms that your kind hate – these are my work clothes.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON B-MOVIE CRAPFEST: “Message From Space” (1978)

Yes, yes, I know, I know: It’s Monday, not Saturday. I’ve discussed this before: This feature is dedicated to the kinds of movies that used to get shown on cheap “Monster Chiller Horror” type local shows UHF channels in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, before MST3K simultaneously perfected and destroyed that format. And, yes, this feature *USED* to run on Saturdays, until we realized that people only look at this site from work, and hence no one read it on Saturdays, but rather the following Monday, if at all.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON B-MOVIE CRAPFEST: “Battle Beyond the Stars” (1980)

There are all kinds of bad movies. There’s the bad ones that are so bad as to be simply unwatchable - pretty much anything by Andy Warhol, for instance - and then there’s the bad ones of no particular distinction that are simply forgotten - “Starship Invasions” staring Robert Vaughn comes to mind. There are movies that get the rep of being terrible, but actually aren’t that bad - “The Giant Gila Monster” is all kinds of dumb, for instance, but there’s an earnest sweetness to it people overlook.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON B-MOVIE CRAPFEST: Announcement

Republibot 3.0's picture

Hi everyone. This is just a little blurb to let you know the "Crapfest" feature has been indefinitely suspended. We'll get back to it eventually, never fear - my love for Le Cinema Merdique continues unabated - but my OCD on writing about such things, rather than just enjoying them has left me feeling a bit burned out, my carpal tunnel is murderous at the moment, and frankly I'm just too busy. I don't even get to watch any *good* movies at the moment.
