RANDOM WANKERY: Assuming Paul McGann's Doctor had been picked up for a series, what would it have affected in the present?

Republibot 3.0's picture

So last night, I had a dream that the current Who revival in the UK (2005-present) was ongoing, and exactly the same as it is in the real world (3 doctors, 81 episodes, five companions, etc), but that the 1996 American attempt to revive the franchise on the Fox network in 1996 had been a success. In my dream, the Eighth* Doctor (Paul McGann) did 110 episodes over 5 seasons. Despite this, however, the series had been all-but-forgotten by everyone but me, and when I talked about it, the only thing people remembered was the crappy TV movie.

RANDOM WANKERY: How does a Pokeball work?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Pokemon is Science Fiction, just deal with it. It’s set in a parallel world, it’s got time travel, they’ve got limited teleportation, human cloning, and limited anti-gravity. It just is. Granted, it’s inconsistent, SF-lite, but it *is* SF. Moving on:

All TV shows are a product of their times, but what if they were products of OTHER times instead?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Obviously all TV shows are a product of the time, place, and conditions under which they were made. Take a movie about the Shootout at the OK Corral made in 1950, and another made in 1960, and you can instantly tell them apart, even though they're covering the same event. Even if they do it in the same way, with the same cast, there'll still be differences because of changing mores, changing tech, fashion, etc.

If The U.S. Air Force Ran Starfleet...

Republibot 3.0's picture

Just humor me on this one, it‘s total epic wankery:

I know you, like everyone else, assume that space SHIPS will eventually be just like Navy SHIPS because they’ve got SHIP in the name, even though airSHIPS had the exact same logic behind them, and that turned out to be ludicrous and led to their demise. By the same coin, I think SPACE ships will not be like WATER ships because they’re in SPACE. It seems self-evident to me that they’ll follow some kind of Air Force structure, since they fly. I come from an Air Force family. (Though one of my uncles was brown shoe navy)

RANDOM WANKERY: Stargate and Inventing Your Own Spinoff!

Republibot 3.0's picture

So now that Stargate: Universe is dead, and those SG1 and SGA movies are unlikely to get made, and the glory days are behind us, the question becomes one of "What happens next?" I mean, is this the *end* of Stargate, or just a wrong turn that they can recover from? Is this Star Trek: Enterprise, or Galactica 1980, or is it merely Doctor Who under Collin Baker, waiting desperately for a Sylvester McCoy? And how long until we find out?

I got no answers for you, of course, but since it's a slow news day and it seemed vaguely pertinent, I thought I'd rerun this "Create your own spinoff" thing from a bit ago.

Note to MGM and SyFy: If you like any of the ideas on here, I *can* be bought. Cheaply. And unlike Brad Wright and Mr. Mallozzi, I won't deliberately antagonize the fans and call them idiots. Instead, I promise I'll give them a show they'll like. I'll also clean up around the office after hours, provided there's no heavy lifting. I've got a bad back, y'see...

And should MGM or SyFy decide to hire me, I think my first act would be to do a show that resolves all the dangling threads from the previous shows in satisfying fashion, while telling their own original story. Can I get an "Amen?"
