RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Macross II: “Ishtar” (Episode 2)

Back on earth following the Zentradi attack, Hibiki stashes the hot fan service girl with his creepy transexual friend “Mash,“ then heads to the network and turns over the footage Dennis shot to his boss. He’s informed that there’s a blackout on coverage of the battle until the UN Spacey makes an official statement. Hibiki rolls with this.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Macross II: "Contact" (Episode 1)

Once upon a time, there was an anime series called “Macross.” This was pretty much the best thing humans have done since we climbed down out of the trees. Yeah, granted, the last six episodes were kinda’ weak, but the thirty prior to that were varying degrees of amazing. “Macross” was exposed to American audiences in a somewhat adumbrated fashion as the first third of “Robotech” in 1985, but it was still pretty amazing.

MOVIE REVIEW: “Macross II: The Movie” (1993)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Despite our rather infrequent coverage of it, Macross really is one of my favorite things in the world. The Big Three franchises for Science Fiction are (In descending order of greatness): Doctor Who, Stargate, and Star Trek. Yeah, I know Trek is more ubiquitous, but it had a long slow fade out, whereas ’Gate just got better and better, and passed Trek in terms of quality somewhere in during SGA. If we eliminate the “Live action” requirement from the big four series, however, then Macross would handily beat Trek for the number three spot.

Just a quick explanation of the concept here for our new readers, or for those who kind of lost track after we put Macross in hiatus back in May:

Back in May I did my last review in this series. Why? Because “The Democrats are back in the Whitehouse / So no one’s got no money no more*” and I just frankly couldn’t afford another disk. My new best friend and hero, “Robotech_Macross Guy” promptly informed me that the entire series was available on Hulu. I thanked him profusely, and said I’d get right on reviewing the rest of the series.

Sixteen weeks later I actually finally got started on it. I suck like that.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Macross: “First Contact” (Episode 11) AND: Robotech: “First Contact” (Episode 11)

This is the last Macross episode I’ve got on hand, and since the Democrats are in the Oval Office again I don’t really have the money to buy any more. This’ll be the last Macross/Robotech review for a while, but I I’m really enjoying the comparison/contrast thing going on here, and I fully intend to return to it as soon as possible.

We pick up our story just a week after Minmei’s sixteenth birthday, and just two or three weeks at the most after the Battle of Mars. Exactly how long the SDF-1 Macross has been in space is unclear, but it’s been several months, long enough for people to settle into a more-or-less accepting daily routine. The series never says, but it’s probably going on half a year by the time we get to this week’s story

There, see, that wasn’t so bad, was it? Only a week between reviews of this show. I should be able to keep up this not-at-all-breakneck pace for a couple more weeks, anyway. For those of you that are new, I’m simultaneously reviewing both “Macross,” a Japanese Anime from 1981, and “Robotech,” the somewhat bastardized American version of “Macross” from 1985. I’m generally using the American names for the characters because presumably our readers are more familiar with ‘em, and also they’re easier to type.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Macross: “Bye-Bye Mars” (Episode 7) AND Robotech “Bye Bye Mars” (Episode 7)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Welcome to the second installment of “Retrospeculative TV,” our feature in which we look at classic SF shows as if they were new, in our attempt to draw attention to the shows that had a formative influence on ourselves and our genre. There are many shows that get overlooked or forgotten when the heavy-hitters like Next Generation-era Trek or the New Galactica, or Stargate go striding by, and that’s a shame.
