When this piece was first writen, it was in trying times for Republicans. Not only had we loose the 2008 election, we got pantsed. Control of both houses and the presidency had been lost. We were involved in two unpopular wars, we‘re bordering on a third, the government was deeply in debt, the international economy is in the crapper, and whether wrong or right, the strong public consensus was that it was entirely our fault. Whether you’re a die-hard Bush supporter, or a moderate who feels mistakes were made, it was pretty obvious that the party and its members was having a bit of an image problem.
Things have changed since then, but not all of them. We're not as low as we once were, but we haven't fully recovered. So why am I reprinting this? Because we can still blow it. We don't want to be taken as idiots, so we *still* need to keep our guard up if we're going to be taken seriously by the electorate.
