RANDOM WANKERY: Assuming Paul McGann's Doctor had been picked up for a series, what would it have affected in the present?

Republibot 3.0's picture

So last night, I had a dream that the current Who revival in the UK (2005-present) was ongoing, and exactly the same as it is in the real world (3 doctors, 81 episodes, five companions, etc), but that the 1996 American attempt to revive the franchise on the Fox network in 1996 had been a success. In my dream, the Eighth* Doctor (Paul McGann) did 110 episodes over 5 seasons. Despite this, however, the series had been all-but-forgotten by everyone but me, and when I talked about it, the only thing people remembered was the crappy TV movie.

DVD MOVIE REVIEW: Doctor Who: The Movie (Fox, 1996)

Wil Avitt's picture

As I've stated elsewhere on this site, I'm not a rabid Doctor Who fan, but I am a fan. I was only nine-years-old when the show's original run ended, and I wasn't a fan of British stuff when I was a kid (everyone talked funny, after all). When I was 25 the show was relaunched and, having long ago given up my prejudice of how Brits talk (though they do still talk funny), I gave the show a chance. I was immediately hooked and watched the show every chance I got. Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor (there have been NINE?!) was phenomenal, and Rose was hot.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Occupation” and “Resistance” (Episodes 11 and 12)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Tonight brings us to the season - and possibly series - finale for Terra Nova, a frustrating little show that never had all that much potential, and yet still somehow never managed to come even remotely close to realizing it. Small targets are harder to hit, I guess. Ratings place this show on the bubble. It quite literally all comes down to tonight’s two-parter. If good, you’ll get another season. If not, well then this is our last view of the Shannon family.

So how does it end?

Actually, not badly:

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Within” (Episode 10)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I’m kinda’ stoned. Dentist’s appointment. I didn’t sleep well last night, and I got up crazy early so I could have a cavity filled - my first one ever - and it was all fairly grueling, and the upshot (or downshot, as the case may be) is that even after sleeping for three hours once I got back, I’m still kinda’ dopey and buzzed. So if my review is less coherent than usual - not that it’s ever all that coherent - I beg your forbearance.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Now You See Me” (Episode 9)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This was a pretty good episode which I will attempt to relate without revealing any spoilers like “Skye is the mole.” Despite the fact that Skye is the mole, and despite the fact that it’s revealed in this episode, I’m not going to say a peep about it. So read on content in the knowledge that this will be a spoiler free review, and that Skye’s “Special Relationship” with the plot will not be revealed. (She’s the mole. Did you know? I didn’t know!)

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Vs”(Episode 8)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The Republiboy has announced that tonight is the last chance he’s giving the show. If this episode stinks, he’s done. Ratings were down about 750,000 viewers last week, but 400,000 over the week before that. Ratings are holding average around 8 million overall, which is probably a little disappointing for FOX, but probably good enough to get another half season like this.

We shall see.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Bylaw“ (Episode 5)

A good episode! A genuinely good episode! Who would have seen it coming?

Investigating the death of a soldier, Jim concludes that it’s actually a murder staged to look like a dino-accident. He finds that the soldier in question was having an affair with a married woman. Upon questioning her, her cuckolded husband shows up and admits to everything. He’s banished in accordance with the bylaws: Given a gun and a backpack, and don’t let the door hitcha’. Of course you know it’s not going to be that easy because we’re only 20 minutes into the episode.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “The Runaway” (Episode 4)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Tonight we found out a bit about the Sixers, but did we find a show actually worth watching? And if the show *IS* worth watching, does that mean anyone actually *will* watch it? “Terra Nova” has lost 19% of its audience in just 14 days, though obviously some of that probably was it being pre-empted by Baseball last week. Ratings for this episode - when they come out - will give a VERY strong indication of whether or not people were interested enough in this show for it to rebound, or if it was just a piece of gum that’s already lost its flavor and been forgotten about.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “What Remains” (Episode 3) UPDATED!

Republibot 3.0's picture

The ratings are in: Seven Million people watched the show last night. Initial ratings for the premier were 9.22 million viewers, which is pretty incredible since it held 'em for 2 hours. Second episode was said by the PR flacks to have held the entire premier audience, but in fact it dropped to 8.73 million. That's actually better than anyone would have expected, and so good I don't know why they even bothered to exaggerate it. Some sophomore dropoff is to be expected.

Dropping 2.2 million viewers in just 14 days, however, *IS* a significant cause for alarm.
