WHAT I'M DOIN' # 45

Republibot 3.0's picture

BE FOREWARNED: profanity below.

Presently I'm reading
1) "Back to the Moon" by Travis S. Taylor and Les Johnson (Terrible)
2) "Stuff White People Like" by Christian Lander (Hillarious, but the kind of stuff that will be horribly dated in ten months and utterly un-funny in twenty. In thirty months it'll be in a box in the garage next to all those "Sniglets" books and "Max Headroom's Guide To Life")

RANDOM WANKERY: Stargate and Inventing Your Own Spinoff!

Republibot 3.0's picture

So now that Stargate: Universe is dead, and those SG1 and SGA movies are unlikely to get made, and the glory days are behind us, the question becomes one of "What happens next?" I mean, is this the *end* of Stargate, or just a wrong turn that they can recover from? Is this Star Trek: Enterprise, or Galactica 1980, or is it merely Doctor Who under Collin Baker, waiting desperately for a Sylvester McCoy? And how long until we find out?

I got no answers for you, of course, but since it's a slow news day and it seemed vaguely pertinent, I thought I'd rerun this "Create your own spinoff" thing from a bit ago.

Note to MGM and SyFy: If you like any of the ideas on here, I *can* be bought. Cheaply. And unlike Brad Wright and Mr. Mallozzi, I won't deliberately antagonize the fans and call them idiots. Instead, I promise I'll give them a show they'll like. I'll also clean up around the office after hours, provided there's no heavy lifting. I've got a bad back, y'see...

And should MGM or SyFy decide to hire me, I think my first act would be to do a show that resolves all the dangling threads from the previous shows in satisfying fashion, while telling their own original story. Can I get an "Amen?"

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Why are there no Literary Fan Films?

Republibot 3.0's picture

PLEASE NOTE: The forum discussion that has developed around this article is extremely theological and extremely theoretical and it *WILL* disturb you if you're a Christian, or frankly if you're a Jew or a Muslim for that matter. Zoroastirans and Baha'I probably should think twice before jumping over this fence as well.

I know, I know, I know, you're a 17 year old kid who thinks nothing can bother you, or a 45 year old guy who thinks you've seen everything, well, no, I can almost guarantee you that you're wrong. Don't go on, it will disturb you, it will shake your faith by talking about things that we Believers generally go out of our ways to avoid discussing.

I strongly strongly strongly strongly *STRONGLY* advise that you don't read beyond this warning. I've been in the position (long ago and far away) where people blabbered stuff I wasn't ready for, and it caused me years of pain. I do *NOT* want to be responsible for causing that kind of thing in anyone else.

FAN FILMS: "Iron Sky" is looking for investors!

Republibot 3.0's picture

So here's an interesting press release from our friends over at the Iron Sky production:

INVEST IN IRON SKY - TAKE PART IN THE NEW WAVE OF INDIE CINEMA

Do you want to take part in a new way to make movies, something the large studios are only now starting to notice and react to after such hits as Paranormal Activity?

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Tim Smith Talks To Us About The Making Of UFO: 1999

Republibot 3.0's picture

Good morning, happy Friday, and welcome to another installment of "Fan Film Friday." Today we'll be interviewing Tim Smith, an in-the-trenches, oldschool Fan Filmaker from Florida. Tim is one of the the two principle creators of the "UFO: 1999" Fan Film series that we've been featuring here on the 'Bot. Tim, thank you very much for agreeing to be with us here, today.

TIM SMITH:

Thanks so very much. It is indeed a great honor to be asked to speak about this old project.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Wreckamovie.com

Republibot 3.0's picture

So you say you like Fan Films, and want to make your own, but can't get started. So you say you don't really like fan films, but you want to make your own very independent no-budget feature. You know what, my hypothetical friends, your lucky day (Friday) is here! (Today!)

"Wreckamovie" is a website started by Peter Vesterbacka (of "Star Wreck" fame) and others specificaly to get these kinds of below-the-radar and questionably-legal projects rolling.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: "Battlestar Galactica: The 14th Colony" (2005?)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Half a decade ago, I stumbled across mention of a fan film project called "Battlestar Galactica: The 14th Colony." Eventually, I found the trailer for the project, which revealed very little about it, but it did make it clear that it was a continuation of the 1978 Galactica, and probably a reaction to the RDM Galactica to some extent. The tag line was "Some Still Believe..." which certainly makes one think that, anyway.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: "UFO: 1999 SID's Return" (2001)

Republibot 3.0's picture

A month ago we featured a "Bridge" fan film parody that tied UFO and Space: 1999 together. Much to my surprise, it turns out the same people did another one. This episode gives us more of the same, but it also throws some Captain Scarlet into the mix. Check it out after the jump.
