EPISODE REVIEW: Warehouse 13: “Nevermore” (Episode 11)

Republibot 3.0's picture

As the first season of this show slouches towards its finale, we’re treated with a wildly uneven episode that, on one hand, is among the best they’ve done, and on the other hand is every bit as vapid as an episode of Tales of the Darkside. I’m going to say that this was an above-average episode, and yet it’s slightly higher bar is almost completely wasted in simply keeping the story from disintegrating in to incoherence. Also, the scene-to-scene production qualities were quite literally all the hell over the place.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Defying Gravity: “Love, Honor, Obey” (Episode 8)

Curiously, while settling in to watch the show tonight, the announcer very clearly declared this to be the “Season Finale” of Defying Gravity. Now, I know for a fact that they shot 11 episodes of this show, and I know it’s been bleeding ratings since day one - the lowest ratings the show ever got was for the H2IK episode, which came in 34th place for the week, the highest they’ve ever done was the pilot, which came in at 21st for the week, which would be fairly lame during the season, but we’re in the dog days of summer here - there’s no competition.

EPISODE REVIEW: Ben 10: Alien Force: “Vengence of Vilgax, Parts 1 and 2” (Season 3, Episodes 1 and 2)

“Ben Ten, I have come to kill you and enslave your world. Is now a bad time?”

PLAY BY PLAY:

We start out with a lengthy scene of combat between a slightly-redesigned Vilgax and Ultimo. They duke it out for a surprisingly long time, and then Ultimo yields and Vilgax either kills or cripples him, it’s deliberately nebulous, but whatever he did, Ultimo’s not going to shake it off any time soon. Vilgax’ lackey hooks Ultimo up to some big techmojo that gives his powers to Vilgax, who’s now hailed as “The conqueror of ten worlds.” That’s right, he’s Vilgax 10!

EPISODE REVIEW: Warehouse 13: “Breakdown” (Episode 10)

Warehouse 13 pulls out a win tonight, and no one is happier than me. Though they’ve only had one truly awful episode thus far (The Lewis Caroll’s Mirror one), I have to admit I’ve never been fully invested in this show, and the last three or four episodes have begun to feel like drudgery to watch. No, that’s too harsh. It wasn’t drudgery, never that bad, but it’s something I found it hard to look forward to. Thus I’m really glad they were able to get a really solid hit tonight, even if they haven’t really knocked one out of the park yet.

EPISODE REVIEW: Defying Gravity: “Fear” (Episode 7)

Whole lot o’ hallucinating going’ on tonight. I suppose I could kvetch about them doing a Halloween episode in September, but then the Simpsons have been doing Halloween episodes in December for more than a decade now. I guess I’m used to it. That notwithstanding, however, I’m not sure how I feel about this episode, it’s a bit to character-heavy, and a bit too “Out of Gas” (Firefly reference) coming right on the heels of some other character-heavy episodes.

EPISODE REVIEW: Iron Man: Armored Adventures: “Fun With Lasers” (Episode 16)

SHIELD just makes everything better, you know? I don’t know why that is. I can take or leave most of Marvel - actually, that’s not true, I can leave the overwhelming majority of it - but SHIELD is just inherently cool, and I’m not sure why. It’s better than Checkmate, it’s better than SWORD, it’s better than the 80s/90s LEGION, it’s better than any hoobajooba metahuman intelligence/spy organization. It’s just cool.

EPISODE REVIEW: Warehouse 13: “Regrets”(Episode 9)

So good news, if you’re a fan of this show: Neorandomizer has informed me that it is now officially the highest rated show in Syfy/Sci-Fi channel history. If you’re a fan of this show, or a fan of the anonymous suits that pull the strings behind the scenes (Hooray anonymous suits!), or if you’re just one of the many, many people who hate Bonnie Hammer, that means the show will almost certainly be coming back for a second season.

EPISODE REVIEW: Defying Gravity: “Bacon” (Episode 6)

So here we are at the end of the first half of the season, and I find I’m much more invested in this show than I anticipated. Yeah, I’m not unaware of its failings, most of them related to the technical side of things, but I find I’m responding well to the very decompressed storytelling, the slow character arcs, the relaxed pace.

EPISODE REVIEW: Iron Man: Armored Adventures: “Panther‘s Prey” (Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Welcome to what may or may not be the second season of Iron Man, Armored Adventures. This might be Episode 2, season 2, or it might just be Episode 15 of the unexpectedly long season 1. Nobody seems to care enough to post it on the ol’ interwebs, and I’m not really a Marvel guy so I don’t just intuitively know this stuff, but wherever we are, it was a pretty good episodes.

EPISODE REVIEW: Warehouse 13: “Duped” (Episode 8)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Well it seems as if Warehouse 13’s days of inconsistent storytelling are definitely coming to a middle. After last week’s well-above-average episode with a consistently-told, generally solid and engaging storytelling hampered only occasionally by random bouts of Counselor Troi-ing, we find ourselves this week right back to a slightly-better than half-assed story, halfassedly told. That said, it’s still one in the plus column, it’s not a loss, but the average is much lower than it should have been.
