BOOK REVIEW: “The Wind From Nowhere” by JG Ballard (1962)

It occurred to me while reading this book that J.G. Ballard really is the high-lord grand poobah of Science Fiction disaster novels. Wait, now the planet is too cold? Make up your minds, aready!

So the economy is in the crapper, gas prices are super-high, the space program is being shut down for half a decade, and we've got an unpopular one-term democratic president who ran a brilliant campaign, but is a total writeoff in office. Sound familiar? (Cough-Cough: Jimmy Carter).

I’m not ordinarily a ‘cause’ oriented kind of guy. It is my opinion that – at least in American life – mass-media-driven causes are basically institutionalized attempts to make a lot of money by playing off the gullibility and liberal white guilt of our fellow citizens. I’ve always been skeptical, but these kinds of things, even when they’re done with the best of intentions, always seem to go wrong. Remember all that grain that USA for Africa purchased for starving Ethiopians when we were teenagers?
