What Abandoning Cars Can Teach Us About Star Wars

Republibot 3.0's picture

This actually came up in conversation in the comments about nine months ago, but I thought it bore repeating:

One of my college roomates, Jim the Idiot, had a piece of crap car his last two years in high school. Never ran right, always on the edge of dying, maybe worth $300, but he put about a grand into it every year. Even though he was a pusher in high school, he could barely afford to keep it running. I guess he wasn't a very good pusher.

An Important Post About The Current Republibot State Of Affairs

Republibot 1.0's picture

Dear readers, contributors, and other members of the Republibot Community,

I would like to start out by thanking you all for your contributions and participation in this website, and we hope that you know that we consider it collectively as our website, all of us, not just us three Republibots.

Our greatest pride, that we have taken so far in running Republibot.com has been that we've never had a flame war. Not one. None in the more-than-four-years we've been online. We've provided reasonably insightful, reasonably intelligent content, and we've gone out of our way to avoid name-calling and liberal baiting and the general jerk stuff that gives so many other Conservative sites a bad name. We just say what we have to say, make our point, and then discuss it like grown-ups. As an approach and general philosophy we've trusted in the basic civility of our readers and members and friends, and though there have been a few crises along the way, R2 and R3, have always managed to defuse them before they went off.

Hey, guys, I'm just really tired....

Republibot 3.0's picture

Hey, guys. Yet another in a seemingly endless series of medical traumas in the Republibot Household. We ended up spending the weekend in the hospital (No, I don't want to talk about it) As you may recall, I recently and abruptly lost my father over Christmas, it looked like I was going to lose someone else Friday. My own health is terrible.

When A is not equal to A...

Republibot 3.0's picture

Ayn Rand famously said that "A=A" and nothing else. Orwell famously spent a couple hundred pages railing against "Doublethink," which is basically believing that A is not equal to A. Heinlein spends several books going on about utilitarianism, and value being related to use and nothing else, and there are no values beyond those, excepting the ones he capriciously throws in. He's the intellectual lightweight of the batch, though, so we can forgive him his inconsistencies. Kiri-Kin-Tha's First Law of Metaphysics states that "Nothing unreal exists."

BREAKING NEWS: Kurt Kobain is still dead. In other news, Elvis is still dead, too.

Republibot 3.0's picture

If you'll permit me to ramble on about something that isn't at all Science Fiction related for a moment here, it occurs to me that had Kurt Cobain not killed himself sixteen years ago last month, he'd still be dead by now.

Social Engineering And The Lessons Of The Twentieth Century

Republibot 3.0's picture

The lesson of the last century, as I see it, is that society is shaped by people, and people are shaped by evolution, and evolution is frequently an irritating bastard that won't let you do what you want, no matter how bad you want it. It's all well and good to say "there should't be any prejudice or hate and we should love everybody," for example, but in fact the reason we've got prejudices of any sort is that over the last 3 million years it's been a survival trait: Those with prejudice survived ("Hm. Those people in the next tribe killed and ate my friend.

Did Conservatives Kill Stargate: Universe?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Brad Wright has been frequently been associated with the comment that "Conservatives killed Stargate." In fact, I think this is a misquote. I can't find anywhere that he specifically said this, but I have found plenty of comments with resentment that people didn't come over to the new show, and some of 'em are of the sort that could be interpreted to mean that, whether he did or not.

SO whether he meant it or not (I personally don't think he did) it's become a matter of fannon that we pulled the plug on MY favorite franchise.

So did we? Maybe.

EDITORIAL: Why is Christian Science Fiction Generally Such Rubbish?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Why is Christian SF such junk? Seriously? Ask anybody if they can even *think* of any Christian SF, and they'll probably only be able to come up with the "Left Behind" books and *maybe* CS Lewis' "Space Trilogy." But then again, they may not. It's actually comparatively obscure among my fellow Christians. Many of my friends at church have never heard of it, and brother, they *love* the Chronicles of Narnia.
