DVD MOVIE REVIEW:“Stargate: Continuum” (2007)

This is the second straight-to-DVD movie to come out since Stargate:SG1 was cancelled a bit over a year ago. The first one, “Stargate: The Ark of Truth,” was somewhat disappointing. When the show was abruptly cancelled by Skiffy (And confusingly as well, since it was at that time their second-highest-rated program), it was in the middle of a major plot arc involving a war with aliens called the “Ori.” Ark of Truth had to take all the plot elements that had been intended for seasons 11 and 12 and cram them into a single 109 minute movie.

DVD MOVIE REVIEW: “Justice League: New Frontier” (2008)

This is two thirds of a really good movie, which makes it especially frustrating when it all falls apart at the end. The film is set solidly in the 1950s, beginning the day (7/27/1953) and ends with a badly-animated president Kennedy giving a speech in July of ’61. The premise is that superheroes have gone out of fashion in the days since WW2, with most having retired. Those who remain are strongly questioning why they do it, since the lines between ‘good’ and ‘evil’ have gotten spectacularly muddy. (Huh?

Straight-to-DVD Movies: A way to keep the flag flying, or just jerking around?

I've been thinking about Straight-to-DVD movies lately. In the past couple years, they've emerged as a sort of testing bed or weather baloon for the continuation/potential revival of various dead shows and/or franchises.
