DRIVE-BY GEEKERY (And A Reminder): 30 Rock and Spongebob and The Dollhouse

Welcome to Drive-By Geekery, in which we atte ---

PLEASE STAND BY FOR AN ANNOUNCEMENT:
We'd like to remind everyone that "Dollhouse" returns tonight, with two - count 'em, two - episodes. It could just be hype, but they're reputed to be "The Best Dollhouse Ever." Dollhouse comes on simultaneously with Stargate Universe, so I have to choose. Dollhouse is the more prestigious show, so I'll review those, and have our standard reviews and overviews up online here asap. Sorry for the delay, but I should have SGU up by tomorrow afternoon. We now return you to Drive-By Geekery, already in progress...

----nd that's my simple strategy for dealing with maintaining peace in Iraq after we've pulled out. It's simple, it's cheap, it's graduated, and nobody needs to die. Anyway, on to the Geek items hidden in 'Dane entertainment for the week:

DRIVE-BY GEEKERY: 30 Rock and Emperor Palpatane

Republibot 3.0's picture

I think it's over. I think it's officially done. I don't want to be one of those people who just rags on something because it's trendy to do so, but I honestly do feel like there's been a sad decline in the quality of 30 Rock - once my favorite show - since about the middle of last year.

As of this episode, the bloom is officially off the rose, and there's nothing special about it anymore. Anyone wanting a cute, funny MILF-fix would be wise to check out Cougartown.

That said, Cougartown isn't likely to give us any random Star Wars gags, and that's one of the few things 30 Rock still has going for it....

DRIVE-BY GEEKERY: 30 Rock and BSG....and Lost

Republibot 3.0's picture

Thursday Night's episode of 30 Rock continues the show's rather odd decline in quality with an indifferent episode that doesn't even bother to resolve some of its plot threads (Closure on Tracy's "Rule of Threes" subplot, please?), but on the bright side it *did* feature Cerie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katrina_Bowden in a bikini as an "Italian Senator," and of course it had two really solid moments of drive-by geekery, quickly followed by one really lame one. Jump through for the details.

DRIVE-BY GEEKERY: Captain Tightpants Returns on Castle...sort of...

Republibot 3.0's picture

For anyone who watched Monday night's 'very special' Halloween episode of Castle, you were treated to a none-too-subtle shoutout to genre fans. The episode starts out with Nathan Fillion ("Castle") playing with quick-drawing and re-holstering a cool-looking pistol while wearing his old costume from "Firefly." (in which he played Mal Reynolds)

He busts in to his livingroom, gun drawn, and his daughter asks him what he's supposed to be. "I'm a space cowboy."
"One," she replies, "There are no cows in space, and two, didn't you wear that thing like five years ago?"

Welcome to Drive-By Geekery, where we note, mark, and 'member* any genre nods in non-genre shows. The idea is that there are programs that probably don't fall within our purview here at the 'Bot, but they're still noteworthy shoutouts that should be pointed out to folks who may be interested but - unlike me - don't have a metal plate in their skull that allows them to watch TV 24 hours a day. (It never ends! It never damn well ends!)
