Gotham: "Penguin's Umbrella" (Season 1, Episode 7)

Wowzers!  It took seven tries, but "Gotham" has finally produced an excellent episode. This one crackled along with serious electricity, not to mention a final twist that, like all good twists, casts everything you've seen before it in a  new light.  Heck, even Fish Mooney was almost tolerable.

The opening sequence has an energy this show simply hasn't seen before. It zips right along. We start with Penguin in his tux walking down the streets of Gotham, two protectors to either side emphasizing his new status in the Moroni mob.

Constantine: "Non Esa Asylum" (Season 1, Episode 1)

Hellblazer. It's a great play on words, and for those of a certain age, it recalls the sometimes quite memorable foundation stone to DC's Vertigo line of comics. Good writers wanted to do Hellblazer. It's iconic. So what are the odds it'll make an awful TV show?

By the by, this review is totally fortuitous. I didn't even know this show existed until Friday morning. Still, the original Hellblazer made enough of an impression on me that I felt an obligation to give it a shot. My take in twenty-five words or less? It's got the look but not the soul.

Gotham: "Pilot" (Season 1, Episode 1)

So who's up to see Thomas and Martha Wayne killed yet again? Twenty-fourth time's a charm, or so I'm told.

Surprisingly, Gotham isn't bad for TV. What it lacks in narrative originality it tends to make up in nice visuals. For every bit of pithy dialogue there is a matching clunker, but there might be possibilities here if the conceit of a young, non-Bat Bruce Wayne and a bunch of precursor Bat villains doesn't run out of gas.

EPISODE REVIEW: Green Lantern - The Animated Series: "Razer's Edge" (Episode 3)

Hello everyone, and happy St. Patrick's Day. A day most commonly known as the one where Ireland was converted to Greek Orthodoxy by a Welsh guy, and who's sainthood was opposed by the Catholic church until about 1700 AD when they decided to simply ignore him instead. Thus: Saint Patrick's day: Not Irish, Catholic by Retcon, and not a Saint. Also, the Irish would have called him "Quadrag" or something similarly ridiculous. Or so I've been told by the people who watched 30 Rock the other night, and are running around the neighborhood dressed in head-to-toe Orange.

MOVIE REVIEW: "Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam" (2010)

Robert Bee's picture

The title of this DVD is misleading because instead of primarily being a Superman-Shazam teamup, it's actually a collection of four DC showcase animated shorts about Captain Marvel, The Spectre, Green Arrow, and Jonah Hex. These mini-features show 2nd-tier DC characters in their own adventures, an interesting idea that DC will hopefully show us more of.

EPISODE REVIEW: Young Justice: “Welcome to Happy Harbor” (Episode 3)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Following a visually impressive and very well directed premier/pilot/two-parter dealie, we finally get on ot the series. How will it hold up? I found the premier to be immediately gripping, but to my surprise I found it didn’t hold up to even two viewings, story-wise, even though the visuals were sumptuous and the animation was easily on par with WB’s straight-to-DVD movies. So where to from here? I’m very eager to find out.

EPISODE REVIEW: Young Justice: “Pilot” (Episodes 1 and 2)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This is another one I’m unsure about. I don’t know if we have the manpower to review this series when it starts its regular run or not, but I thought I’d give it a shot, what with it being a slow night and all.
