Captain America: The Winter Soldier

 Uh… Wow.

This movie is actually good. As in “almost real movie” good, not just “comic book on screen” good. The basic thrust of it harkens back to all those official corruption movies from the 70s, of which “Three Days of the Condor” is probably most iconic. That starred Robert Redford, who cycles back in this one as Mr. Corruption himself, with a smile and a capitol C.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Avengers

Wil Avitt's picture

Ok, here we are, The Avengers. Director Joss Whedon's culmination of everything Marvel Studios has been working toward for the past five years, since 2007's Iron Man ended with a cameo in which Nick Fury offered to Iron Man membership into something called the Avenger Initiative. The Avengers, or Avengers Assemble as it's being called in the UK, presumably to distinguish it from the 60's British television series and 90's movie of the same name, currently holds a 94% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and is being touted as the comic book movie of the year, and quite possibly the decade. By the end of its opening weekend it has beaten out Harry Potter for the opening weekend sales record by more than $30M. So what did I think of The Avengers? I could sum it all up in a single word: disappointing.

DVD MOVIE REVIEW: "Captain America" (1990)

Wil Avitt's picture

You ever notice how when you grow up some things aren't as quite as you remember them being when you were a child? Some things are, for example I still love a lot of the cartoons I loved in the 80's when I was a kid. But some things just aren't. For another example, I loved the TV show Knight Rider when I was a kid. It had a talking car and everything. It was a great show. I even had an RC KITT car. Then, when I had grown up, I happened across Knight Rider on the Sci-Fi Channel after I had gotten out of the Army. The show changed.

MOVIE REVIEW: Captain America: The First Avenger

Wil Avitt's picture

Captain America: The First Avenger tells the story of Steve Rogers, a young guy who wants nothing more than to serve his country by fighting in World War II. The only problem is he's been classified 4F (unfit for military service). Steve's best friend, James "Bucky" Barnes, is a sergeant in the US Army and although he feels for his friend, he knows he wouldn't last long in battle with his frail frame. Bucky tries to talk Steve into giving up on the Army, but can't help but support him every time he tries to enlist (using different aliases in different recruiting offices). It is during one of these conversations that Steve's determination is noticed by a German scientist who is looking for candidates for his super soldier program.
