SATURDAY AFTERNOON B-MOVIE CRAPFEST: “Fiend Without A Face” (1958)

It’s been a long time since we’ve done one of these, but I thought it might be fun to revisit the feature, even if it’s only infrequently. For those of you new to the site, yes, I know it’s Monday, not Saturday, but that’s not the point. The “Saturday Afternoon B-Movie Crapfest” isn’t about a day of the week, but the kinds of movies that used to be shown on UHF channels to kill dead airtime in the post-cartoon, pre-syndicated shows block on Saturdays. This feature is all about the Boring Saturday Afternoon of the soul. I wax rhapsodic…

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: “The Worst Ending in the History of Televised Science Fiction”

Back in July (of '09), Brad Templeton published a VERY lengthy essay on his site about how the finale of the ne Battlestar Galactica is beyond a doubt the *WORST* ending in the history of any televised SF series ever.

SATURDAY MORNING B-MOVIE CRAPFEST: “Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe” (1991)

I’ve never quite understood the concept behind the ripoff or the knockoff. Perhaps it’s simply because I’m a moderately creative person myself, and hence it’s fairly easy for me to come up with my own ideas, or perhaps it’s because I’ve never made a dime on any of my creative pursuits, and hence I’m just kind of ignorant of the financial realities involved, but I just don’t get it.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Babylon 5:: “The War Prayer” (Season 1, Episode 6)

Grrr. The average is ebbing down again. Not terrible, and there’s some more world building here that is worth watching, but that doesn’t disguise the overwhelming feeling of “Meh” that pervades this episode.

EPISODE REVIEW: Eureka: “The Ex Files” (Season 4, Episode 8)

Last time, as you’ll recall, the Space Family Robinson had traveled through time to the year 1948, where they were mistaken for aliens by the local rednecks. However, as that was another show, and had nothing to do with the time travel incident that kicked off this season of Eureka, we’ll ignore it. Also, it took place a year afterwards.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “The Lost Warrior” (Episode 5, 3, or 2, depending on who’s counting)

I think this review will be a lot shorter. I really have hopes this time out. The first one I did was long enough to be evidence of some kind of neurological impairment, but the second one was merely an exercise in hypergraphia driven by OCD. Granted, still a neurological impairment (Actually two for the price of one), but it’s a much more serviceable, much less annoying kind of crazy than the first review. And this one should almost be like the kind of thing a normal human would do.

Why?

Because (A) this is the worst episode of the entire series, and (B) nothing much happens.

SONG OF THE WEEK: "Spaceship Superstar" by Prism (1977)

[NOTE: I reposted this one because I had the wrong link in it on Monday. Whups. Click through to see the actual song I was talking about on Monday]

"Prism" is, was, and is again a Canadian band who were evidently very popular and successful in tehir native land in the late '70s and early '80s. This song was the first cut off their first album (Clevelry called "Prism"), and it was their debut single as well. It's a fairly typical sounding slice of late-70s dino-rock, not much different in kind from what Styx was dishing out, or Boston. Lyricaly it's almost gleefuly '50s in its deliberate goofyness. Seriously, check out these lyrics:

EPISODE REVIEW: Caprica: “Pilot” (Episodes 1 and 2)

Yep. I’m the one who’s going to be reviewing the Caprica series. I know, I know, I know, I’ve been pretty damn vocal about the creative crash-and-burn that the RDM Galactica became, the massive disappointment that was its entire final season, and how the finale was ultimately kind of a betrayal of the fans. Obviously, those of you who are aware of my stance on the show are going to be pretty nervous about me reviewing the new spinoff/prequel.

Let me calm your not-entirely-unfounded reservations before we begin:

DVD MOVIE REVIEW: Battlestar Galactica: “The Plan” (2009)

If you’ve ever wondered why it is that I always end up with the short straw around here, and end up reviewing the RDM Galactica, a show I’ve loved and been betrayed by, well, so have I. It’s not particularly germane to the review itself, but as this is probably my last opportunity to explain, the bottom line is this: As an 11 year old, I was obsessive about the original Galactica. I dreaded the remake, and hated the pilot for reasons that I still think are valid. Our Own Republibot 2.0, however, raved about the series every week during its first season, and cajoled me to watch it.
