BSG News: The Young Admiral Adama, and Caprica

Republibot 3.0's picture

We were supposed to have like two more months until Caprica came back, but they decided to burn off the final ten episodes before the end of the year, before the actor's contracts expire, *Just In Case* they decide to sign it for a second year. - seriously, is this a textbook 'troubled' series or what? - I thought I'd regale you of some fairly old BSG news.

God in Science Fiction: Evangelism or Idolatry?

Republibot 3.0's picture

I believe in God. This is a somewhat unpopular stance in a geek like myself. Secular humanism is generally the order of the day in SF, but, of course, if I was content to follow the herd, I wouldn’t be head writer for this site, would I? Suffice to say, however, that given the obvious rationalist bent of the genre as a whole, religion was kind of a taboo for most of its history.

DRIVE-BY GEEKERY: 30 Rock and BSG....and Lost

Republibot 3.0's picture

Thursday Night's episode of 30 Rock continues the show's rather odd decline in quality with an indifferent episode that doesn't even bother to resolve some of its plot threads (Closure on Tracy's "Rule of Threes" subplot, please?), but on the bright side it *did* feature Cerie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katrina_Bowden in a bikini as an "Italian Senator," and of course it had two really solid moments of drive-by geekery, quickly followed by one really lame one. Jump through for the details.

“The Galactica You Didn’t Get To See!”

Republibot 3.0's picture

In the lean years between Battlestar Galactica and Battlestar Galactica, Richard Hatch (Not the gay one, the other one) attempted a revival attempt of the original show on his own. The idea was that it was 30 years later, Apollo was now commander, and the fleet hadn’t seen any Cylons since “The Hand of God.” Suddenly, they turn up again. The project was called “Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming.” To promote it, he shot a five-minute trailer at Dragon Con in Atlanta, involving many of the original actors, and spiffy (for the time) new effects.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Battlestar Galactica: "Daybreak, Part 2" (Season 4, episode 20) Series Finale

Republibot 3.0's picture

…and so it ends. It doesn’t all make sense, and it goes off the rails more than once, but it is definitely over, and it was pretty good. Well, good-ish. At points. And while this is clearly, clearly not the ending anyone foresaw six years ago when the series began, or thirty-one years ago when the original series began, well, at least it is a conclusive ending. At least it’s done.

TV REVIEWS: Battlestar Galactica: "Daybreak, Part 1" (Season 4, episode 19)

Republibot 3.0's picture

After several months of cooling our heels in Earth Orbit, not doing anything, and after several weeks of randomly moving the scrabble tiles back and forth along the tabletop, but not actually progressing the story, suddenly we get moving again.

This episode was something of a format-breaker, divided somewhat randomly between the present and the past with an extended series of flashbacks.

Is Baltar's Religious Cult Full Of Crap? (Studies in Character Erosion)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Can we talk about Baltar for a moment?

Seriously, am I the only one who feels like the writers have sort of lost their bead on him, and the character has completely crapped out as a result? Pretty much ever since his trial - actually during the trial - the writers seemed to loose a solid concept on what to do with the man, so they quickly turned him in to an ineffectual Hugh Heffner-like cult leader, where he spouts new-agey twaddle like this by way of sermonizing:
