FAN FILM FRIDAY: Batman Legends, by Bat In The Sun

Sorry this is a little late.

I've never been much of a Batman fan, but this short trailer by the semi-professional film company Bat in the Sun has a great sense of moody polish to it.

Produced by Sean Schoenke
Original Music by Sean Schoenke

Starring Kevin Porter as Batman
Tanoai Reed as Bane
Paul Molnar (Patient J) as The Joker
Aaron Schoenke as Nightwing

DC UPDATE: Arrow Trailer Released

Warner Bros and the CW have released the first footage of what could end up being one of the best shows of the new fall season, Arrow. If you're unaware, Arrow is based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, first made popular on television played by Justin Hartley on Smallville. Make no mistake, Arrow is NOT a Smallville spin-off. They share no continuity, as you will see in the trailer.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Dark Knight Rises

Well, here we are, my review of The Dark Knight Rises. It's a week late, but I'm sure you'll all agree that the delay was both necessary and worth it, as giving people a little extra time to see the movie allows us to have a better discussion of it. If you didn't catch my DC Update last week, I will offer one last warning. The following review contains MASSIVE SPOILERS. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I highly suggest you do not read on any further.

DC UPDATE: The Dark Knight Rises

Alright, I just got home from The Dark Knight Rises. This is listed as a DC Update instead of a movie review because I'm not going to review this movie. At least, not yet. Due to the nature of the movie I can not effectively review it without giving away sensitive information. This movie does not translate to my spoiler free review policy. To that end, I am going to delay my review for one week. A week from this monday I will post my review for all to read. You have until then to see the movie.

DVD MOVIE REVIEW: Justice League: Doom

Last year fans of comic books and cartoons based on comic books lost a great storyteller far too early with the untimely death of Dwayne McDuffie. This week, we have been given a gift: Justice League: Doom, Dwayne's last work.

SCIENCE FICTION UNIVERSITY: Batman, Year One on DVD

This time, Dr. Starr takes a look at the latest Direct to DVD release from DC. Hidden cleverly in this article is some commentary on criticism and why it's important. It's a different view than we've been exploring in recent discussions and deserves some thought....

Pace, Adaptation and Comic Book Aesthetics

One of my happiest shopping moments at Christmas occurred while walking through Walmart last November and seeing that Batman: Year One (BYO) had been produced as an animated film and released on DVD. I put it on my Christmas list pretty darn ASAP. When I got it for Christmas (thanks, son), I watched it as soon as I could (which was on Christmas day). My reaction was not at all what I expected.

DC UPDATE: What Are You Reading?

This is going to be a short column this month, mostly because it has only been a so-so month in comics. We're in the saggy middle section of the New 52 inagural story arcs, most of which I expect to last 6 issues. I will say this, however, if Action Comics issue #7 rolls around and Superman is still running around in the jeans and t-shirt, I'm dropping that book. He should be in his Kryptonian battle suit in that title already. I didn't like the t-shirt look when they did it to Kon-El and I certainly don't like it on Kal-El, especially with the stupid cape tucked into his t-shirt.

DC UPDATE: Coming Together

Now that month 2 of DC's The New 52 reboot (man, I am REALLY starting to hate that word) is behind us things are starting to come together and stories are really starting to emerge. Superman is still rocking the jeans and t-shirt look over in Action Comics, Hal Jordan has gotten back his GL ring after it was taken from him and given to Sinestro, after Hal killed Krona at the Climax of the War of the Green Lanterns storyline and Superman has come to blows with Batman and Green Lantern in a DCU handicap match.

DVD MOVIE REVIEW: Batman: Year One

Wow. To be honest, that pretty much sums it up. I'm sitting here writing this as the end credits are rolling, and I'm finding myself at a loss for all words except, wow. I'm so at a loss for words that I really don't even know how to begin this review. I'm at a loss for words, of course, because the movie was that good. Very seldom am I blown away by a movie, but blown away truly is an apt description of the feeling this movie left me with.
