The Legend Of Korra, Book 3: Changes: What Went Wrong? [SPOILERS!]

Kevin Long's picture

Just watched the two-part season (And probably series) finale of "The Legend of Korra" last night while recovering from my hosptital. I'll admit I was pretty emotionally raw, and the only digital device I had to watch it on was a 3DS, but even so it brought me to the edge of tears on occasion. It is undoubtly the best example of over-the-top gonzo action/drama/awesomeness produced by the Avatar franchise since "The Siege of the North" in the original "Airbender" series.

EPISODE REVIEW: The Legend of Korra: “A Breath of Fresh Air,” “Changes,” and “The Earth Queen” (Season 3, Episodes 1-3)

Kevin Long's picture

I’m probably not going to be reviewing this series because, honestly, I just kind of don’t like reviewing TV shows anymore. I don’t know why. Just the same, SOMEBODY should be reviewing this. It’s the best cartoon on TV, and at this point the Avatar franchise has provided five years of great entertainment. Four of them very solid, the fifth kinda’ ‘eh’ and very uneven, but still not bad.

The Legend Of Korra

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is my kids' all-time favorite cartoon, and it's actually one of mine as well. A solidly-defined 'novel for television' (To use the Straczynskian argot) with a definite beginning, middle, and end, the show managed to engage kids and adults alike. The animation was beautiful, as well.

Live Tweeting the 82nd Academy Awards (Archive)

Republibot 1.0's picture

Welcome to the archive of the Republibot Live Tweet of the 82nd Academy Awards show. For those new to twitter (www.twitter.com/republibot), the main thing to remember is that it is a real time service that lets you share information in 140 characters or less. So all of the following happened live during the show and was posted to the Republibot twitter account as I typed it.

I have edited out the Twitter discussion between me and friend of Republibot Church (@ChurchHTucker) to avoid too much confusion on your part, but feel free to go on Twitter and reconstruct it if you would like.

Now jump on through and hopefully it makes sense...

PROCESS: "Why do most SF films suck?" -or- "Why did those stupid mountains in Avatar fly, anyway?"

Republibot 3.0's picture

A lot of us wonder why most SF films - and really films in general - are so weak. For those of you not in the know, the way movies usually are born is thusly:

1) someone gets an idea - in the shower, on the can, in a drunken brawl which may or may not involve a public restroom, or, if you're Joss Whedon, in the dorm, with a bong in your hand, watching a Friday The 13th movie, down the hall from a bathroom. The point here is this: Nearly all successful ideas involve bathrooms in some ways. Unless you're George Michael, or my old High School lit teacher, obviously. Yikes!

MOVIE REVIEW: “Avatar” (2009) [SPOILER LITE]

Republibot 3.0's picture

Wow, what a gorgeous movie! Seriously, I’ve seen a lot of movies in my day (More than eight, definitely), and I have never seen a film in which the scenery was this sumptuous. Oh, sure, I’ve seen movies with considerably more lush set design, costuming, what have you - the 1984 version of “Dune” springs to mind - but, the exteriors just completely blew me away in a fashion that I haven’t felt since “The Fifth Element” (1997) or back in ‘77 when I was ten and saw Star Wars for the first time.

MOVIE REVIEW: Avatar

Republibot 1.0's picture

Ok, so here goes – let’s just dive in and get the painful part of this review over with right up front and then spend some time on meaningless rambling and thoughts. Avatar, the movie, was much, much better than I expected – surprisingly so, but still not the masterpiece that you would expect or possibly hope based on the intense amount of effort and money that has been put into it. Why is that the painful part? Well… because I was hoping for a disaster of monumental proportions that I could make fun of endlessly and think back on in my old age fondly as the height of Hollywood overindulgence.
