MOVIE REVIEW: G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Wil Avitt's picture

Well, it's better than the first one, I can say that much for it. Here's the thing, I liked G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, though I realize I'm in the minority on that one, but it was a perfectly mediocre movie. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't unwatchable, either. My biggest problem with the first G.I. Joe was that it was kind of just a two hour toy commercial. I would much have preferred a more straight-forward military action film. But it wasn't terrible, and in a lot of ways, Retaliation is slightly better.

I just received word that the Walt Disney Corporation has just bought out Lucasfilm for $4.05B, almost the same price they paid for Marvel Comics. The link to the article sent to me is: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2012/10/30/disney-buying-tar-wars-m...

OPINION: Why Marvel Knocked Avengers Out of the Park and Why Warner Bros. Will Ruin Justice League

Wil Avitt's picture

The Avengers is currently the third highest grossing film of all time behind Gone With the Wind at #1 and Avatar at #2. It should also be noted that Avatar's and Gone's numbers include DVD and television revenue (and in Gone's case that includes more than 70 years of revenue), so a good case can be made for Avengers being the most successful film of all time. Of course, it didn't take too much longer after Avengers hit the ONE BILLION dollar mark that Warner Bros. started talking about resurrecting the Justice League movie that was aborted back in 2007 or 2008. But why was Avengers so successful and can Warners possibly replicate this success?

MOVIE REVIEW: Dredd

Wil Avitt's picture

Does anyone remember the movie Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone from the mid-90's? If you do, those memories are probably full of disgust and disappointment. Or, if you're like me and actually enjoy horrifically bad movies, maybe you liked it. The truth is, the 90's was not a kind decade to superhero and comic book-inspired movies. This was, after all, the decade which produced Steel with basketball great Shaquille O'Neil and the ever-so-hated Batman and Robin starring George Clooney. The good news is, comic book movies have gotten much better and Dredd, the new adaptation of the character from the British comic magazine 2000 A.D. is no exception.

DC UPDATE: I Am Personally Going to Assassinate Geoff Johns

Wil Avitt's picture

Ok, not really. But that was a great headline, right? Right?! Anyway... Yesterday marked the beginning of DC Comics' "Zero Month", in which all of DC's titles would be numbered 0 for the month of September, marking the end of the first year of DC's The New 52 relaunch. I went on record last year saying this wouldn't last a year. I stand corrected, because there are as yet no signs that DC will revert back to the pre-Flashpoint continuity. The tagline for Zero Month is "New Characters Introduced. Secret Origins Told. Mysteries Revieled". It is about one of the new characters introduced that I would like to rant and rave about, and why I spent three hours last night praying that Geoff Johns would be smited with gross boils all over his pretty boy face.
