Dave Brockie was found dead by his roomates last night. He was just a couple months shy of his fifty-first birthday. His cause of death has not been released.

Brockie was best known for his stage persona, "Oderus Urungus" of the comedy-metal band, "Gwar." A Canadian by birth, Brockie spent most of his life in Richmond, Virginia, where, as fortune would have it, he went to school with my wife.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos – A Spacetime Odyssey: “When Knowledge Conquered Fear” (Episode 3)

This episode bugged me a little bit for philosophical reasons I’ll get to a little later. Consider this full disclosure, so if I’m a little dour in this review you’ll know where it’s coming from.

The Curious Case of “Lightyears,” a movie that was never made, and yet was made one-and-a-half times.

Last week I reviewed the film “Imposter,” on Philip K. Dick’s short story of the same name. Despite being an amazing writer, beloved to people who hate him, a disturbing number of films based on his work are so relentlessly dull that they even be called “Awful.” They don’t even make that much of an impression. “Imposter” was another one of these. Predictably, the story behind the making of that film is much more interesting than the film itself. Lucky you, as I’m stuck for something to talk about this week.

EPISODE REVIEW: The 100: “Pilot” (Episode 1)

The latest entry in The CW network’s Angsty Teen High Concept Sweepstakes is “The 100.” Premise: 100 years after a nuclear war, the only survivors of humanity live in a space station called “The Ark.” As an attempt to find out if the earth is now viable for human habitation, they drop 100 impossibly attractive juvenile offenders on death row. The kids are expendable.

Well, at least there’s no vampires for a change.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “Some of the Things That Molecules Do” (Episode 2)

Last week I mostly bitched and moaned about how the Cosmos of 2014 wasn’t as good as the Cosmos of 1980. I expressed my disappointment at the music, the pacing, the lame design of the “Spaceship of the Imagination,” and the general lack of wonder and awe.
