ORIGINAL FICTION: "Curse the Darkness" (Part 1)

The pilot was in the half-empty cafeteria, shoveling down her breakfast. She paused to take a long drag on her cigarette, and saw an intern leading a nervous looking young man in. The intern caught her eye, and she waved him over. The two men threaded their way through the tables. She quickly downed a swig of orange juice, and stood just as they reached her.

“Major Pari Bhatnagar,” the intern said while bowing slightly, “May I present Jal Khambatta; Mister Khabatta, may I present Major Bhatnagar.” She shook the young man’s hand.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “Deeper, Deeper, Deeper Still” (Episode 6)

Hoo boy. It’s an obvious joke, so I’m just gonna’ get it out of the way: that title really sounds like an add you’d find in “Home Video Magazine” circa 1980, doesn’t it? “Desiree Cousteau in…” There. We’re done. I was thinking about mentioning the ratings, but honestly we’re halfway done with the show next week, and that seems a better time to discuss it.

EPISODE REVIEW: The 100: “Murphy’s Law” (Episode 4)

Despite the gratuitous gore, last week’s episode was a big stride forward for this show, filling in backstory and giving us a focus and some reasonably complex characterization. It also saw a drop of nearly 400,000 viewers from the week before. And we’re down about 800,000 from the premier. This has nothing to do with storytelling (Which is improving) but simply whether or not people are watching. Which dictates whether or not the show will get a second season.

Galactica 3.0

As IO9 and Variety and others are already reporting, Universal Studios has announced that they will be rebooting Battlestar Galactica FOR A THIRD TIME. Taking a page from the JJ Abrams/Paramount playbook, BSG will be become a big screen franchise that will share a premise and character - but not continuity or actors - with the previous versions.

I miss original fiction on the site.

Kevin Long's picture

Not much to talk about today, sorry, but I've been ruminating on the fact that there's really not much Original Fiction on the site anymore (Though what there has been has been - I think - above average).

I sort of miss that. I understand why it doesn't happen all that much anymore: it's a hell of a lot of work, and there's not a lot of payoff, but still, it was nice, right?

To that end, I think I'll start serializing one of my stories next week.

Sincerely,
Kevin Long
