BREAKING NEWS: And now Ricardo Montalban has died (1920-2009)

…and now, in some crazy and sad coincidence, Ricardo Montalban has died on the same day as Patrick MacGoohan. According to legend, Aaron Spelling was watching repeats of “The Prisoner” on PBS in the mid-seventies, and while he didn’t care for the show itself, he liked a lot of aspects of it. “Fantasy Island,” then, started out as his attempt to build a show around bits he liked from the SF/Spy drama: The mysterious and always-classy #2 became Roark, the midget that was always following #2 around became Tattoo, “The Village” and its environs became Fantasy Island itself.

BREAKING NEWS: Patrick MacGoohan has died (1928-2009)

I’m stunned. I’m speechless. The biggest of my three role models from sixties – in many ways, my model of how to behave politically – has died.

Owing to bad planning on the part of his Irish parents, MacGoohan was actually born in New York, during a brief and ill-conceived attempt to improve their lot in life. It failed, and they moved back to Ireland shortly thereafter. Some years later, they moved to Ireland. After University, he got in to acting as a trade.

Phase II Crew takes on Buck Rogers

According to a story on TrekMovie.com (beware, minor Phase II spoilers...), James Cawley of Star Trek: New Voyages/Phase II and his production company has acquired the rights to do a web series based on "Buck Rogers". This iteration of the venerable hero is to be set in it's original mileu and concept: Buck Rogers is (again!) a WWI pilot who awakes from suspended animation in the 25th Century.
