BOOK REVIEW: “Your Trip into Space” by Lynn Poole (1953)

I would say that everyone who considers themselves a devotee of Science Fiction should read at least one book like this, were it not for the fact that everyone I know who likes SF already *has* read at least one book like this. I myself have read several, though not in a very long time. I used to love these kinds of 1950s books about how great the Space Age would be once it got going.

THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: The Spiral 50/50

Yesterday we talked about the USAF's abandoned space plane, the X-20 DynaSoar. Not to be outdone, the USSR wanted a one-man fightery space plane thingie, too. Their entry is below the jump. The CGI footage at the beginning comes from the old Dan Roam website, "Deep Cold." the rest is mostly archival Soviet footage of Spiral drop testing.

AWAY GAME: What the Hell is Jinx?

As you may or may not know, I've got kind of a thing about non-standard planets. Most of the ones we see are deadly dull (like earth), or have a monolithic environment (Ice planet, desert planet, jungle planet) Yawn. I discussed how this lack of imagination bugs me here http://www.republibot.com/content/why-aren%E2%80%99t-there-more-interest... which led indirectly to a conversation about that subject with Lensman, the guy who runs the Incompleat Known Space Concordance over at http://www.freewebs.com/knownspace/

THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: Proto-space shuttles

Yesterday we talked about the abandoned Soviet lunar program. Today we'll talk about a needlessly-abandoned American space project. There's tons more interesting info under the jump, so stick with me. Now, contrary to popular belief, the Space Shutte is *not* the first reusable space craft. That honor and distinction go to the X-15, but you need to click through the jump to find out more.

SONG OF THE DAY: "Saturn 5" by the Inspiral Carpets (1994)

More of a nostalgia song than an SF song, but it's got big rockets in it, and that's all that really matters, right? Well, maybe not, but you'll have to click through and watch it just to make sure.

"Stargate Universe" and "Dollhouse": Ah, bugger!

Ah, bugger!

I've just realized that Dollhouse (Fox, Friday, 9PM) and Stargate Universe (Syfy, Friday, 9PM) have something in common. In deference to Trekies who might be reading this, I'll simply say "They're both on at the same time." (Trekies are notoriously bad at math)

BREAKING NEWS: More "Dr. Horrible" on the way, says Whedon

As reported in TVGuideMagazine.com, during a Dollhouse conference call, Whedon revealed that there are plans for a sequel; he's just debating on how to go about it-- stay with his original shoestring budget or go with a bigger budget production.

I just want him to release his numbers from the first go-round.

C'Mon Joss! We can't join the party without some info!

Thanks to user Melchidezek for the tip!!!!
