TV Review:Smallville:Beast
Submitted by Republibot 2.0 on Thu, 04/30/2009 - 21:46The 'Beast'ly Doomsday doesn't make an appearance, but his presence is definitely felt. Tonight's Smallville brought a sense of foreboding and grim decisions to be made.
Chloe is still keeping the monster in her basement. This is not a good idea when you have as many unexpected houseguests as she does...

EPISODE REVIEW: Lost: “Variable” (Season 5, Episode 14)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Thu, 04/30/2009 - 18:22The hundredth episode of Lost gives me something that few shows can say this far in to their run: “Well I didn’t see that coming.” Granted, Lost has managed to do that for us fairly consistently through its run, and this season in particular has been pretty much a case study in dropping a hard plot twist sixteen times per season, yet still managing to keep a coherent story. Even so: I didn’t see that coming.
Play by play:

Black Canary Barbie Doll? What the frack…?
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Thu, 04/30/2009 - 08:00This isn’t the kind of thing I generally notice - obviously, since it happened last year and it’s just now grabbing my attention - but the very idea of a “Black Canary Barbie Doll” made me laugh out loud. http://www.pinkraygun.com/2008/07/17/black-canary-barbie-heathen-tramp/ Though I have to admit I’m a bit confused. Are there any Barbie doll collectors out there who even read DC comics? From a marketing standpoint, it’s kind of iffy.

Episode Review: LOST: The Variable
Submitted by Republibot 2.0 on Wed, 04/29/2009 - 22:42On this, Republibotlet 2.2's birthday, I saw the most horrific thing I've ever seen a mother do to a son-- and quite a bit more.
Spoilers, ho!
Unfortunately, I may've missed a few things, so I'm counting on you folks to fill me in.
When I got the TV turned on after the mandatory 15 minutes of deguassing that the equipment requires after a presidential 'news conference', I saw that the Oceanic however-many were having a confab in Sawyer's cottage. Oh yeah... Daniel was trying to convince Dr. Chang to stop drilling for chronotons.

THINGS THAT INTEREST US EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE NOT REMOTELY SF: "The Hunt For Gollum"
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Wed, 04/29/2009 - 09:24Anyone seen this yet?
I haven't, but boy do I want to!

Are there more brothers in The Venture Brothers?
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Wed, 04/29/2009 - 08:03I don’t actually know any more about this than any of the rest of you do, possibly less as I’ve been deliberately ducking spoilers, but here’s my *theory* about The Venture Brothers: I think The Monarch and Rusty are brothers. They’re the same age, they’re both utter jackasses, they’re both skinny as hell and both have very red hair. We’ve also seen that Rusty’s dad, Jonas, got around and sired at least one illegitimate offspring, and that The Monarch was essentially an orphan-with-a-trust-fund. Who set up the trust?

TV MOVIE CAPSULE REVIEWS:Babylon 5:”Legend of the Rangers” (2002), “River of Souls” (1998) and “A Call to Arms” (1999)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Tue, 04/28/2009 - 08:01Babylon 5: Legend of the Rangers: To Live and Die in Starlight (2002) – yet another TV Movie, intended as a pilot for yet another B5 spinoff. This one was stillborn, but watching it again for the first time in 5 years or so, I rather liked it. Not great, but I think maybe it had more potential than the quickly-cancelled Crusade. As with nearly all pilots, it’s really exposition-heavy. The acting is all rather stiff, and it’s a crying shame seeing the late Andreas Katsulas in his last-ever appearance as G’kar without him having someone solid to play off of.

RANDOM GEEKERY: So who’d win in a fair fight? Starfleet or Earthforce?
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Mon, 04/27/2009 - 08:00Ok, this is cool: a couple years ago there was a very high-quality fan film called “Star Wreck: In the Pirkenning” which eventually pitted the Star Trek universe (Or at least a parody thereof) against the B5 universe (Or at least a parody thereof). Despite my raving about this for several years now, no one seems to want to watch it, much to my annoyance. (Like lots fan films, it’s pretty funny, but unlike some of them, this is intentionally funny, as it’s a parody).

REVIEW: "GI Joe:Resolute" (2009)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Sun, 04/26/2009 - 16:14I recently expressed that “GI Joe: Resolute” was the absolute best kind of wish fulfillment, since it more-or-less simultaneously informs you of a deep-seated desire you didn’t know you had, and satiates it. (

Fantasy vs Sci-Fi on CSI
Submitted by Republibot 2.0 on Sat, 04/25/2009 - 20:53Mandy:I love sci-fi esp that talking horse show, that was one of my favorites
Hodges: Mr. Ed? Yeah... That's not science fiction
Mandy: Sure it is. It postulates an alternate universe in which horses evolved a larynx
Hodges: That's fantasy
Mandy: No, Fantasy is anything that travels faster than the speed of light, Hodges, which is why if Albert Einstein were alive today,he'd slap your face.
